I just found out about the new Dozier Design "Phat Bob" slip joint, and new D2 Coppersmiths. I've never seen copper bolsters on a pocket knife, I wonder how they'd hold up over time.

The lockback looks great, thanks for the pics. I've got a couple of the dog's head barlows on the way, I'll try to post picks when they arrive.

Canal Street makes Kabar's traditional line of products. There's also a larger Coppersmith piece out this year.

A knife shop owner and big KA-BAR enthusiast commissioned and paid for the D2 Phat Bobs. I wouldn't hold my breath for D2 Big Easies for a while. It is however a super neat idea and I can't wait for them to hit the retail chain to see if this experiment has merit.

I really want to like the Coppersmiths but so far it isn't happening.

WOW! I love the look of the lockback, but a quick check told me that I couldn't afford one.

Why? The blade length? A 5" blade length might be much too much, but it's beautiful. The copper accented bolster and dog head, coupled with the dark bone looks amazing to me. I'm tempted to pick one up and test it for a couple weeks.

It's the copper. Like I said...I really want to like them but when I actually see them I just don't. It's purely an aesthetic dislike. The stainless pivot standing out like it does doesn't appeal much to me either.

The blade length can't be 5" if the open length is 8 5/8". Right?

That blade length spec has got to be a typo, I'm sure.

Just so happens, I received a flier in the mail today from A.G. Russell's Knife Collectors Club, and this knife is listed in it. It lists the closed length at 4-7/8", with a 3-3/4" blade. I believe that adds up to 8-5/8" overall (it's late, and my brain is winding down...). They also show the smaller one at 3-3/4" closed, with a 3" blade.

I've been really looking forward to the release of the new Coppersmiths. The 3 inch version looks just my cup of tea, and with D2 steel, its sure to be a great workhorse.

Copper fittings on blades can age really nicely. Sure the stainless pin kinda pops, but over time I think it will become part of the contrast and character in the bolster. I have specifically selected copper on a couple of 'sharps' in the past because of this, and I always take the time to admire the 'wear' and patina when I have it in hand.

Now I have a ball park figure to aim at, I can put some pennies away until they show up for sale.

I really like Bob's basic designs on his folders, and would like to see his customs offered as slipjoints. However, while I like his basic designs, and the knife above looks very much like one of his designs, I don't like the "hilt" aspect. A knife like that doesn't need a thumbramp/rest. Also, I would like to see D2 used, but at least AUS8. 440A is not the steel for this knife.

I am sure these will be at shows, I'll make my decision then. But with 440C blades, I don't think I'll get one. Just save up my scheckels for a real Dozier custom folder. I'd like to see a midtech line, similar to his Dozier Arkansas Made line, of knives in the 245-313 dollar range.

The coppersmith is an interesting design.
