I've enjoyed BF, especially this side of the forum.

Anyway, I returned my Blackout 1550ST because I didn't want the serrated blade. Now, as I wait for my Skyline Damascus, I'm trying to figure out if I want to get the Blackout 1550 or a different knife. What would you recommend? I mainly carry these on me because I like them. I will use a knife when needed, but I teach for a living. Therefore, I don't put too much work on my knives.

Also, where do you order from... if you buy online? I have my Skyline Dam coming from House of Blades, but Blade HQ looks to have better sales. Where should I be looking to purchase future (Kershaw) knives?

Thanks,
Pocket Blade

Ironic with it being the title. I buy my Kershaws primarily from KershawGuy (Dave) kershawguy.com. He has the Blackout plain edge (a blem) in stock if you'd like. Couldn't recommend him enough.

Thanks! So, blems are just as good as new knives? Do people look down on blem owners? I'm just curious.

Blems are basically the same thing as new knives, but have a cosmetic wrong. They usually have something like a scratch or a VERY small piece of coating that came off the blade. They're great for beater knives.

I don't think people look down on them. Most of the Kershaw collectors have blems.

Cool. Thanks for the reply.

I have another question.

Do most Kershaws work with standard lanyards that are at Blade HQ?

Most of the lanyard holes on my Kershaws are on the small side. If you mean something like this, I don't think it would work. BTW, that knot is called the soloman bar/ cobra weave. The hole would be too small. EDIT: If I am correct, this is the knot used to attach the aforementioned lanyard. I would just learn to tie the soloman bar yourself. I think it is one of the simplest knot to learn. TIAT on Youtube has an excellent tutorial.

Most of the lanyards holes are on the smaller side. What you can do is tie some fishing line around the lanyard loop and try to put the lanyard through the hole like that. You'll have to at least double knot the fishing line so it doesn't break while you're trying to thread it through. Once you get the lanyard through, just thread it back through the left over loop. I learned this from another member while I was having the same problems.

Blems are what got me into knives. I say get a blem if you can.

whateatsrabbits, why do you say people look down on blem owner's? I am curious.

Even if people do look down on blem owners, and I am new here but have yet to see evidence of that, I say buy what works for you. I am not a knife collector. I like knives because I like to carry them and use them. My damascus skyline will be the only knife that I store away and don't use.

So why not buy blems? I have bought 5 knives now since I found this place. The first three were blems and then I bought a dam skyline and all black Cryo from dave. If I get another knife it'll probably be a blem too. I am going to scratch and ding them up anyways, so why not save a few dollars? I dislike the XXXX on the blade far more than I've disliked any of the blemishes I've found on my knives.

I mean if your strapped for money blems are the way to go because there cheaper, But I would rather spend a little more and not buy a factory second. If its an out of production or limited model I've got no problem with buying blems. Also I've got a damascus skyline coming and I'm going to use it.

Well, I splurged and just ordered the Brown Skyline w/ Black Blade and Orange Skyline from Kershaw Guy. :)

I also have a Damascus Skyline on the way!

Wait people look down on blem owners? That's a bit harsh. And how many people are we talking about?

I currently do not own any blems, but I would purchase one. It's a knife that is just as capable as a warranty'd version. Sure a NiB is more ideal, but looking down on people for buying knives? I don't even look down on people who chose to buy counterfeit knives. I can disapprove, but to each his own. Probably just mis-worded it I'm sure.

I collect mainly the Kershaw Leeks and this blem issue is funny for me. Every single time I have found a rare / L.E. Leek that is a blem I have bought it so I can have one in my collection. Also, every single time I have bought one, a NIB one comes up for sale, so I end up with two.

Blems are OK in my book, but for my collection, I prefer NIB.

Russ...

If you're collecting, then I can certainly see your viewpoint. However if you're buying users I see nothing wrong with saving some money. I bought a CF blur blem from Dave for $75 because it had a burr on the thumbstud. After playing with it for a week or so the burr fell off. That knife would cost at least $25 more NIB and for me, $25 is a good savings.

For lanyard holes that are on the smaller side, I use a combination of 110 & 550 paracord like what my Rake has on here:

You don't have to gut the 110 paracord either, and I think it's stronger than gutted 550.
