What have you got against concrete?
I'm a country boy, and hate the conrete jungle.
AC welcome. This is a great place to learn and share survival. You said that you learned some survival skills from a place like the boy scouts or some thing like that
what was the place?

Take care AC

A Chrisitan verson of boyscouts: Royal Rangers, kinda corny thinking about it now, but definately gave me a good basic understanding of survival
Doc's made a good point as usual! And you may as well bookmark ragweedforge now, you'll be starting up a credit account just for Ragnar in no time.
Actually, I REALLY would like to buy knives, but I want to makemy own. I've gone through alot of knives and never had any real good ones. I've tried leatherman, buck, and gerber and they all have broke on me, so I have been wanting to do my own knife for awhile.

Hey AC, first...welcome aboard!

Second, if you really want to make your own knife and need info or advice, stop on over at the Makers forum here...they are a super bunch of guys just like in Wilderness & Survival Skills. They are willing to share everything they know to help out a new maker. I've learned a ton just from reading the old posts and sticky post at the top of the threads, and it takes years off the learning curve. Enjoy! -Matt-

thats what got me into knife making , well sorta ..

its hard to buy a good knife in Aus , chinese stainless floods the place , and trying to get anything that is quality seriously hurts the wallet
after working in construction and mining industries some I learned of the existence of some dammed impressive glues and steels that can be got and set about making my own knife that wouldnt bust under my use :)

problem is tho , its adictive , the first ya make is OK , but you got to make another to improve on it , then your mate is totally iimpressed ad wants one so you make him one , and then you see a knife in the shop for $100 and figure that its a piece of crap cos you can see a bunch of falults in its design or fit and finish or both ... that is when you know you got a problem and might as well begin buying knife making tools serious cos you are never going to look at a blade the same again ...

G'day Myal, how you going mate?

You're spot on about the knife situation in this country, its a downright disgrace. Slightly amusing story to illustrate my point: A while back, I was walking through a shopping mall when I came across a King of Knives store. Now, I knew they stocked very few outdoor type knives and the ones they did stock were overpriced rubbish, but being a knife nut I had to go in and have a look around anyway. So I'm browsing through the store when the shop lady comes up and asks if I need a hand with anything.

"Umm, not really" I reply, and then add somewhat facetiously "don't suppose you've got a Fallkniven H1 in stock?"

Puzzled look on lady's face. "What's that?" she asks.

"Oh, they're made by a Swedish company, pretty good quality" I reply.

Lady: "Oh, you mean a Swedish army knife?"

Me: "Umm, ahh, yeh", thinking to myself, "surely they don't have any Fallknivens - must have got some Moras in stock - nice one"

Lady walks over to the display counter with a whole load of Vic SAKS. "We've got a whole range of them, what kind were you looking for again?"

Me, somewhat heartbroken but seeing the humor in the situation "Umm, err, its not quite what I was looking for".

Puzzled look comes over the lady's face again. "Oh, OK".
