I know there are many other places to put this thread, but I trust and respect your opinions just a bit more than on other forums.

Here's the scoop:
My sister stayed with me for a week, helping around the house and giving the parents back home a break. She watched me carve up an Awana Grand Prix car and in general use my Izula and CRKT for an assortment of awesome and everyday tasks.

Here's where you come in!
She has about $20 saved up and wants to get a knife to use for stuff (don't know specifics, but it's great to hear that she wants a very useful tool!)

I am willing to toss in a few dollars as well. I thought about an Izula, possibly used. Mom says she is pretty forgetful, and the idea of her losing a $50 knife is kind of a hard lump to swallow.

Any other recomendations at her $20 price point?

Maybe an opinel for a starter knife? ~$10-$12, no big deal if it goes away, and you can modify it to make it nice for her.

the kabar dozier comes in pink.
If she wants multiple blades, you can get here a cheap Rough Rider slipjoint, or a sodbuster of some sort.
+1 on the opinel.
The classic Victorinox SD is quite useful, too.

hi for the money its pretty hard to beat a buck vantage small liner lock its about 20 bucks and its a slick little folder that holds a good edge.

the small one is 19.95 if you shop around the large is 35 or 40.

take it easy

I like the idea of an Opinel as someone else suggested. That's one of my favorite cheap knives. Be aware that the No. 6 is the smallest Opinel with a locking blade.

If that's too "old-fashioned" to appeal to her, the Kershaw OD-2 with Zytel scales is a neat little flipper knife that can be found for 15 dollars.

See what she thinks of the pink Izula! Maybe she'll like it enough to save up for it.

Get Sis a K-2 folder for Girl's Day (March 3rd), and help her save for an Izula. I think saving for a knife may help her feel more responsible for it.

Mora, and for a 12 year old go with stainless. She won't have to worry about maintenance and the knife won't patina which may be ugly to a 12 year old girl. Cool gift!

you beat me to the od-2

Get her something that isn't too big or sharp.

Also, ask your parents if it they don't mind her having a knife. Some people might not be too excited about that.

Take her to a store that will get out various knives and let her see what she likes. Between hand size, style of carry, and looks, , but what's important to her likely isn't what you will notice.

william sonoma down in the plaza has a stainless #8 Opinel under $20. (twist lock mechanism, locks both open and closed)
otherwise, check ragweed forge for wood handled Mora's.
not ugly, some come in stainless, and he has decent flat rate shipping.

:D Go to Wally World and get her a Buck Paklite skinner. If you want to toss in a few bucks, get one of the guys on here make a kydex sheath.:D

Check out Dave in the dealer forums. You could get her a blem kershaw right in that price range. It would still be a better quality knife then most 20.00 knives. If she looses it it's only a 20-30.00 knife. Not something that cost your or her mire. Also a certain store has or had some Ker and other brands in their cave for cheap. I had cases and bucks for some
Of my first knives that took one he'll of a beating. Unlike some
Of the brands I had later i'n life.

+1 on the Buck knives idea. Many great options in the $20-$30 price range (both folder and fixed.)
