New knife for 12 year-old sister?

If the Izula is too much of a stretch above her budget, how about a Eskabar .

I agree with chris in mo's post above about the necker but she might like it better without the bottle opener handle.:D

Small money for a quality blade and she can personalize it with paracord.

Why wouldn't you get her a SAK? Personally an izzy or bnekker is a terrible idea unless she is trained and taught how to use them...

That's true. A SAK sure can be useful to nearly anyone. In fact, that's what I picked up as a gift for my little sister since she's now a beginner rock climber. Inexpensive, easily replaceable, can be customized as far as which model with which tools, and can take a good deal of abuse.

Of course if you're going to put her to work batoning wood for you, that's another story...

I'd also suggest a SAK. The Climber Stayglow in particular.

Kids her age love the different tools and they will serve her much better than just a blade. Something she'll treasure a bit more to not lose it easily, I think.

The scissors and the tweezers are the tools girls like best on SAKs. The Stayglow scales will help her keep better track of it.

Ad a smartly braided lanyard and that'll give her some cord if she needs it in a hurry. Match it with a paracord bracelet too.

The corkscrew isn't only for opening wine. It's handy for knotted shoe laces and such. You can also ad the little tiny screwdriver that fits into the corkscrew. Great for tightening the little slot screws on sunglasses.

Kids are too easy to please and a variety of things in one always makes for a better gift than just a knife.

Ad a basic survival kit that the Climber would fit in, like an Altoids box, and she'll have some bandaids handy for those learning curves and you'll be her hero.

Wow! Appreciate the feedback.
Greyfen, that Ontario folder looks pretty decent. Might be just what she's looking for. I'll send the link on to mom.

She is definitely looking for a folder, and I already suggested the pink Izula - "Pink in the wrong environment" she says.
Certainly considering a SAK, that Climber Stayglow looks pretty decent.

Keep 'em coming if you've got any more suggestions! I knew I could count on you guys/gals.
