Just got this new knife in from Canal Street Cutlery today. It was an SFO for Sooner State knives. It is the 3 3/4 " Single Blade Half Moon Pie Trapper in Caramel Aberdeen Jigged bone handle. It comes in 14-4CrMO steel blade, can anyone tell me anything about this steel? Came sharp out of the box with a nice grind on it. This is a very slim, thin, handy size of a knife, rides well in my office pants. This is well built knife, only wish it had half stops, but fit and finish are excellent, far beyond some other knives I have had that cost much more that this one did. I will attach their picture of it, bone is beautiful, the pics do not do it justice.

Durbin, 14-4CrMo is excellent blade steel, it's hardness is 58-60 rc, although it can reach 65 rc depending on the heat treat (imagine trying to sharpen that!). Here's a quote from Timken-Latrobe:

"14-4CrMo is a wear resistant, martensitic stainless tool steel that exhibits better corrosion resistance than Type 440C stainless steel. The molybdenum in the steel provides superior corrosion resistance compared to some higher-chromium stainless steels. The combination of the high carbon and molybdenum contents results in the formation of hard, wear-resistant molybdenum carbides in the microstructure of the steel. These molybdenum carbides provide superior wear resistance and edge retention for cutting tools and knives. Typical applications include knife blades, bearings, valve components, and bushings."

I picked one up from AG Russell myself, and really like it. It could cut hair out of the box, and is very pocket friendly. The stainless pins and liners are a nice touch as well:

nice knives guys! the single blade trapper is a sweet knife indeed really feels good in the hand, definately not too obtrusive. I think that will be another winner for CSC! knife shown below next to a regular two blade trapper.

Eric and Rusty,
Thanks for the replies y'all! That is some fine lookin' stag y'all have there. I love stag... and now... I want one of those!:)

Eric,
Thanks for that quote on the steel, sounds like it will make a fine user too. Although it won't see too much hard wear and tear, it sounds like if I need it too, it will cut well and for a long time. Good to Know

I recommend these to someone who is looking for a nice slim knife, very well made.

I have one put up in the cupboard that my wife will be giving me as a gift in October. I have examined it enough to know that the fit and finish are excellent.

The steel is made by Timpkin Latrobe, as ea42 says. It has the same composition as Crucible Metals 154CM, and I expect it will have similar edge holding qualities.

Ach, the combination of fine workmanship and topnotch steel was just too much temptation.

I really like the idea of that pattern, and will probably pick up one of these some day.

I do wish it were truly "half" of their Moon Pie Trapper, which is a larger 4-1/8" knife. That is, one of those knives with the spey blade removed. I suppose that would make it pretty close to a slimline trapper type config, but those are a bit skinnier.

Nice knife!

I've seen these offered by another dealer but in Greenbone, looked really handy! Unfortunately, he won't sell to those of us in the EU...

Good dimensions on this knife, does it have stainless liners then?? If so, I need one.

Those are really nice looking guys. Just a little more pocket friendly than most trappers and good looking to boot. I would say they got a winner with that one.

Willgoy, liners and pins are stainless, bolster and cap are nickel silver, blade length is 3 3/8", total closed length is 3 3/4". I've e-mailed you links to several purveyors as I don't think the mods allow it on the forums. If it's OK (Blues?, Bastid?), I'll post 'em here. I think most folks here know who they are. Some handle materials I have seen available are: caramel aberdeen, sambar stag, elk stag, red stag, buffalo horn, and greenbone. I believe Rusty1's are the elk stag (Nice shots buddy! , you should do it as a side job!).

Thanks Eric, I keep on trying to take as best a shot a possible. Elk They are indeed!

Durbin, you didn't keep it long then?:D

Got mine from the US today and I am disappointed frankly:grumpy:

The snap (what snap?) is pathetic, I've had the same problem on a Canal St D2 Trapper. If it's this weak now, what will it be like in a few months:eek: Don't they do springs at Canal St?

The other thing is that the nail nick side of the knife is mirror polished and the other side matte. This seems and looks odd or are they all like this?

It looks nice until you open it and it's a fine size and style I like but it just isn't good enough.

That's 3 out of 3 Canal Sts. with issues, I reckon this is the last...

Beautiful knives, guys! Canal Street seems to be a top-notch company. The only thing I don't like about them is that the shield they use is horribly ugly (to my eyes).

There are just so many amazing, well-made knives on the market today. What great times we live in!

The other thing is that the nail nick side of the knife is mirror polished and the other side matte. This seems and looks odd or are they all like this?

That is a traditional touch, I believe. Traditionally, only the mark side of main blades were mirror polished. The rest of the blade surfaces were less highly finished.

I have one on the way...
It will take a couple of weeks to get here.
Will let you know how it is..........

I sold mine, not because I was dissatisfied, but because I had some expenses come up, and needed the cash. THought it was a nice knife.

Well, I got mine in (pic HERE). It is a looker - and it's sharp. It also has the afore mentioned weak spring. I asked the dealer who sent it to me to check the others he had (so I could decide if I wanted to swap it) and he told me they were all weak. I'm going to keep it, but I probably won't loan it out - most who would receive it that know me are used to locking knives anyway (they'll get to borrow my GECs instead). FWIW, my CS Canittler has good (double) springs.

Can one of you guys that have that single blade trapper from CSC, tell me if you can hold the knife in your left hand and "pinch" the blade with your right thumb and index finger, to open it without the nail nick?

Really digging those, but am a southpaw!
