New Knife Recommendation UK

Well I have gone for the Spyderco UK penknife and cannot wait for it to arrive.

I know I "voted" for the SAK, but I'm sure you'll be as pleased as can be with the UKPK. I know that a lot of thought went into it's design and build. Some of that design process was as a result of collaboration between Spyderco and certain memebrs of British Blades forum, so I KNOW it'll be a good knife.

Just don't come running to me when you want to borrow a corkscrew, bottle opener, can opener, screwdriver, scissors, tweezers, file or saw ! (Just kidding ;) )

Of course, anything from W.R.CASE range of American slipjoints would be good, fine and old school too!

Hi walkingsapien
I'm sure you will like the UKPK :)

However I agree with Longstrider that a SAK, or any 'old school' knife as willgoy suggests would be a safer bet if there is any likelihood of you being searched.
There is a certain degree of paranoia about carring knives in the UK at the moment, especilly by young men and teenagers, I don't know if you fall into this category !

I am fortunate to live and work in a very rural part of Scotland and for the most part I feel able to carry a locking folder most days, however if I go into Inverness or Aberdeen or down to Edinburgh, I will only take a SAK.

I guess it is all about perception, SAKs are seen as non-threatening by most folk. My daughter even had one in her carry on rucksac when we went through Aberdeen airport on our holidays. She had been at a scout camp the weekend before and had forgotten it was there! The security staff did not make any fuss about it, and provided us with a jiffy bag so we could post it home :D

Enjoy your UKPK and stay safe:)
DJG.

yea it can llok aggressive, I never carry a knife in public unless i'm working because i'm 18 and in Northern Ireland they really look at ya for it :D

Well, I received my UKPK and I am impressed.* It looks less aggressive that I anticipated, certainly more so than a SAK, but definitely less aggress than my previous serrated liner lock.* The G10 works well and provides good grip even when wet.
*
The lock is very good and I cannot imagine that it would close inadvertently in every day use the addition of the finger choil makes it a safe slipjoint IMO.
*
The clip ensures that it is concealed easily on ones person with makes it an ideal EDC for me.
*
It came sharp although I have brought a Lansky sharpener to hone the edge as I feel it could be improved.
*
Overall a good EDC.

good good, very happy you went for it. I find that it may not "feel" really sharp but when you start cutting with it you'll find it hnadles anything pretty well. :D

Hi Sapien,

Thanx for the confidence. I hope the model serves you well.

Considering it was a bunch of you British Blokes that created the model, it should serve. We did miss on the "aggressive Looking" part. We think it's the black G-10 and the wide blade.

The '08 model will have other color handles available.

There is also a shorter version coming out called the "Urban". Colored scales as well as other blade shapes will be available on the smaller folder.

I have a UK Penknife. Great design. It has been supplanted by the (locking) Caly III, but I still like that Penknife and carry it from time to time.

I need a new knife for use in the UK that will not get me in trouble with the police if carrying it. ... I would assume that these will be acceptable to our British police due to their blunt points and rescue use.

I don't think you can safely assume ANYTHING about your laws and the police.

The UKPK is a great knife as you now no doubt know. You might also like Spyderco's 'Pride' model. Still a slipjoint and legal for UK carry. A fair bit smaller than the UKPK, blade a smidgen over 2". I believe they've been discontinued but can still be found online. Has a big old stars and stripes on the handle which may or may not give you pause...
By the way, use online U.S. dealers as UK prices are ridiculous.

The spyderco Cricket, my favorite small blade under 2 inchs locks opened. Your laws don't leave you much choice...........

The UK design includes a "finger choil". In addition to letting you choke up on the blade, the finger choil protects the fingers.

If the knife is used as designed, the index finger is in the finger choil when you are using the knife. If the knife somehow is forced to the closed direction, the index finger in the choil prevents the blade from closing more than a little ways.

The Cricket would still be an illegal EDC here in the UK despite it's small size. ANY locking knife is seen in the eyes of the Law to be no different from a fixed blade and is therefore not legal to carry without a specific "good cause to do so". Crazy I know, but true.
One of those tiny (fixed) things from a SwissCard will get you in trouble where a normal SAK will not. Seems that the UKPK is the nearest thing to being the best single bladed folder unlikely to lose you a finger that we can carry here these days. :(

I carry the UK penknife everyday and it is the safest slipjoint I have owned, it cannot close on your fingers due to the 50/50 choil. There is also a nice strong backspring and I have not had it try to close on me yet through lots of daily use. The other good thing is it is UK legal under section 139 of the 1988 criminal justice act, though you can still fall foul of the offensive weapons laws but that can happen with any item you carry if you use it as a weapon.

Great knife though, good steel and comfortable to use wouldn't swap it for anything :)
