What do you do when you get a new knife? I buy a cigar (smoking a Punch right now) and use the new knife to cut it. Today I cut my cigar with a bayonet grind UT6.

Does hiding the packaging from the gf count as a ritual?

Seriouly though, I dab some mineral oil on the blade(s) ( regardles the type of metal)

Get out all my sharpening equipment and put my own edge on it. :)

Since to date only one or two blades I've seen actually came with a factory edge I was satisfied with.

Then I shave some hair, and slice some paper, just for the fun of it.

LOL... never thought of that one... All the women I have been with have shared my love for weapons to a degree. Never had to hide a knife from an old lady.

Last step to my new knife ritual is to make a youtube video.

I take the new ones into my shop and cut some old leather belt with it and make some fuzz sticks - kinda see what it can do.

Check the edge, oil the joint, maybe look up some history on it, and then put it in my EDC rotation. If it's a carbon steel type, like my big ol' HI CAK, it gets a nice polish.

I don't think I have one, sometimes I might need to put a little lube on the detent track, I guess that could count.

Never thought about it before, but I just realized that I do do one thing. Even when I've researched a knife before buying it (which I pretty much always do), I generally will Google it once it arrives to see what kind of buzz there is about it--forums, youtube, blogs, etc. Just seemed like weird habit to me, but I guess it could qualify as a ritual.

Also gotta take a few pics while it's new and shiny. :)

Inject it into my veins and feel the rush. Then lay on the couch for a couple days until the high of the new knife wears off. Then I order another one...

I don't really have a ritual to speak of. I normally inspect it for any defects and make sure it is what I wanted. If everything looks good, I put it with my other EDC stuff or in my pocket. I do love cigars though, so Charlie Mike, I may have to borrow your ritual next time I get a knife in the mail. In fact, I think I will go smoke a cigar right now. Thanks for the good Friday afternoon idea!

I open the package with the last knife I got. Then I use it ,handle it a lot and get the feel of it.

Take it on the next outing and use the piss out of it, to get a feel for the blade shape, ergonomics, steel quality through use, and of course, maintenance. Come home and sit in the recliner with an arkansas stone and some wet and dry and polish the edge over a movie.

The first thing I do when I get a new knife is...
Put it in my pocket.

Soon after, I will sharpen it so that I have the edge I like on it.

I track the package all week online. The day before it arrives I specially select a knife to unbox it with and put a perfect edge on it. Then i hang it from the doorknob. The day of arrival I wait outside my door on a lawn char with drinks and snacks. When it arrives I sprinkle steel powder from previously sharpened knives on the box before quickly slicing it open. At dinner that night I toast the new knife and then burn the box while chanting a ancient sacrificial prayer.

...Just kidding...hows that for a ritual though? :D I open up the knife, inspect it, and spend all of the next day playing with it.

I clean/oil/lube it (a little Rem Oil, wipe off the excess, then wipe down the blade with a silicone cloth), then spend the next day or two opening, closing, and just generally ogling it.

Open the box with the last knife that I got and liked. Then I test the edge and sharpen it up if its not to my liking out of the box. then I play with it for days
