New knife ritual

I take is apart. Clean every inch of it, relube it, put it back together, if I can I flip the clip for tip up carry, and finish it all up by stropping the edge to a polish.

I inspect it as soon as its out of the box for overall function, fit and finish, blade centering and lockup... Then either take it completely apart, clean everything and oil it up or keep it together and wash it in the sink with real hot soapy water and a toothbrush and then oil the pivot. It all depends on how smooth the action is out of the box and if its used or not. Then I'll touch up the edge until its nice and sharp and slap it in the pocket.

I open the package with the last knife I got. Then I use it ,handle it a lot and get the feel of it.

me too.

but these days its always more then one knife in the last package, so i have to put the rest aside for next time. its gonna be a long time and many more knives before all have gone through that ritual!

First thing I do is open and close it a few times, to get a feel for it. Then I'll thumb the edge, followed by paper slicing and attempted arm shaving.

Sharpen if necessary, clean it up, oil if necessary. Then put it in my pocket. Usually I'll specifically eat a lot of fruit that day, so I can slice and peel a lot.

For the past I can't remember how many knives I have done video unboxings for YouTube and to reminisce my first in hand experience with a new blade. On camera I inspect all the usual stuff and then give my initial impressions.

I then continue to toy with the knife. Edc it until I've decided it's a keeper.

Digging the Cigar Celebrations. I may have to indulge in the near future. ;]

I just smoked a fuente short story, got a few new knives in. Just got the Humidor setup so this sounds like another great charlie mike idea.

Not sure about cutting the cigar with the knife though......

I'm like Albertaed. you don't own it until you cut yourself with it. Heal of my hand usually.

I usually open the package with the last knife I received - in a more or less an obligatory way. It helps validate the previous purchase - at least for the moment. I then sit there in 'awe'. "Awe, I could have bought an Acme 101 for that much!" or "Awe, why did I buy another #%@& knife?" Then there is the shock to find that my tears of sadness have already added to the 'patina' of the new knife - and that the new rage, Whiznat XYZ-1A blade steel, really isn't stainless.

Actually, I usually just sit there with the package remnants scattered - already a victim of the previous and new edges. I have been known to just sit there - new knife in hand - grinning like the Cheshire cat - my drool likely adding to the new knive's patina.

Stainz

PS The smell of smoldering canine fecal matter - aka you guys and your old stogies - would likely break me of the new knife purchase habit. A little Chevas - that would be good!

i find a panhandler to throw it at. if it does not stick, it goes in the "for trade" pile. if it does, it gets scrubbed with bleach then oiled :D

no real rituals, but if the new knife requires a sheath to be made (i always hope they come with a junk sheath) then i use THAT knife to score the kydex. that way, it's like the knife is helping make it's own sheath.

I track the package all week online. The day before it arrives I specially select a knife to unbox it with and put a perfect edge on it. Then i hang it from the doorknob. The day of arrival I wait outside my door on a lawn char with drinks and snacks. When it arrives I sprinkle steel powder from previously sharpened knives on the box before quickly slicing it open. At dinner that night I toast the new knife and then burn the box while chanting a ancient sacrificial prayer.

...Just kidding...hows that for a ritual though? :D I open up the knife, inspect it, and spend all of the next day playing with it.

I'm embarassed to say how far into this I went until I realized it was BS :p

You mean it's BS? I was gonna write it down for my next knife. :p
