I've had a drill doctor for over a year now and love it. The company sent me something on this new sharpener. The knife sharpener attachment looks interesting except for the fact that the angle (27 1/2) doesn't appear to be ajustible.
Do any of you guys own one of these? Is it worth the money?

Pretty cool, how much does it cost? I dont think I need another sharpening tool but good idea. I would rather see an attachement for my 1 x 30.

It looks like that system would mess up the tip very easily and most likely go through belts quickly. At 2.75 per belt it would add up. The total sharpening system would cost $172.85 + shipping (129.90 & 42.95) and you have to constantly buy belts (only available from them) if you sharpen often.

That is way too much money for a marginal system with extreme limitations. I bought paper wheels and a grinder and have loved every second of it (it only takes seconds, not minutes).

Razor Sharp paper wheels = $33.95

Dedicated 8" Bench grinder = $49.99

$83.94 + Shipping for a far superior system that will last a lifetime... just my .02 worth

i would think it would take alot of experience to use the paper wheels. Am i wrong- iveheard about them but never seen them being used.-thanks-marekz

It took me less than 10 minutes using chinese knives to figure them out. Now it's just a couple of quick passes and I'm done.

I'll second Jason's comment paper wheels rock a little practice on some cheap knives and your good to go.

I guess I need more practice, I got the paper wheel system and have tried it several times. A couple of times I got the blade pretty sharp but not better than I had done before. Most of the time I get something really dull.

Please is there a secret to this, I think I am having a hard time getting the angle of the blade to the round wheel correct.

As far as the price, the offer they sent (good until 12/31//2009) was $79 for the tool and then the attachment was free after a mail in rebate.

But like jawilder said, you have to use their belts.

I got a paper wheel after hand sharpening knives for over 2 hours each. Your wasting your money buying something that puts a 27 degree angle on a knife. I would stay away from that and if you have it already take it back . The tormak is one of the finest machines for sharpening but comes with a price of a grand. I forgot to say that a axe has a 30 degree angle and a hunting /skinning knife should be 20 degree and kitchen /fillet 15to 17. My paper wheel is the best 40 dollars ive spent the grinder I put it on is only 1/3 hp and works excellent. I sharpen any knife in under 2 min and will shave hair and cut your customers like they have never used a knife lol

Patrick,

Have a look at http://sharpeningmadeeasy.com/paper.htm he has some pretty good info on getting the angle correct.

If the 27.5-degree edge angle is the only option, it simply wouldn't be acceptable for any of my knives. Most of my knives are less than half that angle. Even my choppers are considerably thinner.

I wonder how the came up with 27 degrees, I am not sure I know if anything that uses that angle unless maybe a wood chisle. Any machine will need to be adjustable and use commonly available belts or supplies. I would not want to be tied to their supplies exclusively.
