new knife shop ideas

double the amount of electrical outlets you think you want and make them all with 4 outlets. Have a seperate area for gringing dust making and fry to have compressors and dust collectors outside and a duct tube inside with lots of attachement points. Enjoy. Jim

I am still trying to figure out a good exhaust system. I have most every big sander and grinder centralized now so I thinking I can drop a main hose from the attic and attach smaller hoses from each machine to it. I want to mount the vacuum in the next room for noise reasons. Separating sparks from steel grinding and wood dust is still my biggest obstacle.

I used hardi boards on my walls in the welding/forging room. I think they will shed sparks and keep my shop from smoldering and bursting into flames later. They only go up 4 feet on the wall but that seems to bounce off sparks when using the angle grinder.

Lights, heat and all the comforts of home is a must. That way when the wife kicks your ass out of the house you will have a place to live.

good idea on the stove vent hood. I will put one above my grinder and buffer and another one above the sand blaster.

if possible, a separate roon for your grinders along with a dust collection system. That's my next real shop project. It keeps all the dust confined to a small area, instead of a fine coating everywhere.

I'm in the process of framing my house, and I have the dirt work done for a shop rite behind and to the side of it. I'm planning on 24x30 building with a 12x30 drop shed on the back side. The drop shed will house the hot work area, forge, power hammer, press, vise, weding bench and such. The inside will have one small room for cleanwork and referance materials and such. One wall will have a garage roll-up door for extra light and air when it's not too cold. Plenty of outlets, benches all the way around with islands. I will be putting a dust collector in as well and run it outside.
