New Knife - what makes it yours?

Just curious if others had a ritual that you went through once you get a new knife to make it yours.

What I do is:

Immediately try slicing paper;
Cutting up a cardboard box;
Clean it, lube it, start carrying it.

Oh and I know it has become an EDC if:

Used it to open a bag of dog food.
Used it to open containers of water.
Cut the lint trap of the washer outlet.

I usually feel great just before opening the UPS or Fed Ex box etc.
You know...the kid at Christmas thing. I Make sure I have COLD beer on hand. Put on a good old war movie or something similar. Sit Back, oogle, go ever line of the knife. Look for flaws. The knife and I have a few beers. Usually dig up articles and photos of the knife I just bought and get caught up on it's history, variations, etc.
Then I wipe any fingerprints (with a Tuff Cloth) off the metal and leave it laying around at arms reach for a few days. By then I've decided whether its a user or a Safe queen; and or whether I have just got to have another one.

Cheers,
Hal

Hi!

My case passes through several fases:

First I flirt the knive in the store. Then I keep going to that store to look at it. After I must gather an enough number of arguments to convince myself to achieve that knife that seems not to get out of my head. Finally I buy it, I play with it, I inspect every curve and joint, I shave my left hand, I oil it and feel happy about my investment. Then I promise myself that I won't spend more money on knifes... Till I meet the next one...

One of the first things I do with every new knife is to sharpen it. It isn't mine until it has my edge on it.

My first step is usually to disassemble and reassemble the knife, then I feel like it's mine.

Of course once it's drawn blood (mine) then I KNOW it's mine. Unfortunately there is usually not very much time between receiving a new knife and somehow managing to zing myself. I sometimes wonder if I don't have a subconscious sadist/masochist buried deep in my psyche.

a small blessing! ;)

God is handing out knives now! What kind??? How come He didn't tell me??? Man, and I tell Him everything!
:D

I usually take whatever knife was in my pocket out and put the new one in. Then as soon as I get to my tools I take it apart clean it and then put it back together and lube it up with my own oil. Then it goes back it the pocket till I can think of a reason to sell it and buy a new one...:)

Don't laugh ....

As for my ritual, I usually take shower with my EDC.
For 'investment piece', I just clean it thoroughly, and wax it.

People do weird things with their knives, you see

:)

knife,

"The earth is the Lord's,
and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell
therein"
ps24:1

"Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
Every good and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or
shadow of turning"

JS 1:16,17

:D

First I light a bunch of candles and some inscense and dim the lights. I put on some Sitar music and take off all my clothes. Then I dance around it for about half an hour. Finally, I sacrifice a goldfish with it and rub the mess all over my chest.

After that I can start carrying it.

Oh and I know it has become an EDC if:
I've cleaned the lint out of my belly button with it.
Trimmed my toenails.
Picked my teeth.

After that, sometimes I sell it on Bladeforums as LNIB. ;) :D

Rev,

I knew those all ready look at my sig I was just scewing around.

So how do you dedicate your knife to the Lord? Or is that not nessary since it's just on loan? :)

I Turn off the lights, light two candles, one silver, and one gold.. then cast a magick circle. I lay the knife on an altar pentacle and begin the consecration by evoking the god and the goddess. Then i bless the knife with each of the four corners or elements: earth, air, fire and water. I thank the gods for their pressence, then i close the circle. The knife is now ready.

;)

It becomes mine when it get's it's first mark or blemish. Then it is no longer mint, or like new, and so therfore is no longer a trader. That's when it really starts to get day to day abuse.

I just play with the knife until I end up bleeding, then I put it away and start doing something else, just to go pick it up 5 mins after that, then tell myself that its just a knife (sacrilege!!) and put it back again, to go pick it up again 10 mins later... you get the point ;)

That for 10-15 days (or til I get a new one)

Bye!

I don't have the urge to put it on trading posts within the first 24 hours. If I don't have that urge it's a keeper
