New Knife - what makes it yours?

I play around with the new knife. Kinda a touchy feely thing. Till teh damn thing cuts me. Then I know its ready

I'm with Elvis. The first thing I do is give it a check for blade wobble, lockup, and if the blade is centered when closed. Then the fun begins; I take it apart and begin to "work" on it. The "work" consist of polishing the liners at the pivot area, polishing the pivot bolt, and polishing the blade tang that contacts the liners/washers. Then I put it back together using Tuff-Glide lubricant and tighten the pivot to my liking, use blue (med.) loctite on this step. Then I polish it using Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, throw a coat of Renaissance Wax on it , clip it in my right front pocket and declare to the world........IT IS MINE!!:D  :)

Agree with rev_jch also. God is good to us......much better than any of us deserve.

I just got a CRKT M-16 last night (one of the 1* models) I knew it was mine for sure when I showed it to a couple of co-workers that immediately dropped it while playing with the Flipper, not once, but TWICE. Got a ding at both ends of the handle.

Good thing I'd bought it as a user, eh?

Bummer! I sympathize. My BOSS did that to me recently with a MINT knife I was trying to sell.

It seems like it's OK when YOU make a ding in your knife because it's YOUR knife and then it shows YOUR use. But when someone else does it to your knife then the knife feels like...

Well, have you ever sat on a toilet seat that was still warm from someone else's ass?:barf:

LMAO!! love the analogy, and yes, it's very accurate. I also try to make it a habit to keep my knives pretty for at least the first hour I own them...

I just play with mine for a rest of the day. And nearly always try a couple of "combat" moves (if the knfe has THAT look). The next day I begin carrying.

Now the CRKT is mine in a more positive way...

I paid $3.00 to have the edge rounded into more of an "Asian" style, and have the evile chisel ground edge taken away. Only took a smidgen off the blade, but it's got a much more graceful, easy to use curve on it, and no strength appears to have been sacrificed. Only thing left now is to USE it instead of hacking and cutting up everything in sight just for fun...:D

Take it out and inspect the knife for any flaws that require work(edge, movement, lockup, wiggle) and if I have to ship back to factory I do that before playing with it(make sure it's perfect before I get attached).

If it's a good knife, then I oil the pivot up, toss a new edge on it(even just the 204 whites to polish the edge is good), strop, and play till it cuts me. After I have bled on a new knife, then I know it's mine... and shortly thereafter, I post a review after I give it a few scratches from EDC.

I open and close the knife about one hundred times with
my eyes closed to get a "feel" for it. Make sure the pocket
clip is not to tight. Whittle white pine for about five minutes.
Test hair shaving qualities. Then it's mine.

Remind me to never buy a knife from Beluga! ;) As for myself, if I put it in my pocket and keep it on my dresser for frequent "fondlings" then it is mine.
Matt
