Hi all,

I have seen this knife advertised in several magazines and I was interested in knowing if anyone on this forum had one and could tell me what they thought of it.

Here is the site:
http://www.ancientedge.com/products.htm

Thanks,
John

P.S. I am assuming it is new to this forum because I did a search for it and came up with nothing.

I have no opinion about the knife, but I applaud the honest language:

The ***** was developed with one goal in mind, to provide those who are in a position of "last defense" with the best tactical knife possible. Unlike most knives currently available to Special Operations personnel, the ***** was not designed by a committee to fill a multitude of roles and excel at none. The ***** is not for sawing, skinning, hammering, throwing, or opening ammo cans. It is purely a tactical knife and was designed from the ground up to fulfill that mission.

For all I know, the knife itself may be trash, but at least they make honest use of the word "tactical."

According to others, it is a POS. What, for example, is a 'slash index?' (Maybe a chart outlining this would have reduced some of the recent angry puppy whining.) Reads to me lke some of the most creative writing I've seen recently outside of Hansard, where our politicians' immortal words are recorded for all posterity.

I seem to recall this knife being discussed earlier this year. Must be in the year 1 forum. I'm too lazy to go find it right now :-)
As best I recall, a piece of ATS-34 with zytel scales was not deemed worth the asking price...

Read the thread about hype and then take a look at the website above. You can't find a better example of evil advertising. By the way, the handle isn't even made of Zytel; it's just simple plastic. It probably costs less than $30 to make the knife, if that, yet the knife sells for $300? Also, last I heard there was some speculation over whether or not the knife even exists. If you've actually seen this knife, please post.

I remember reading that the blades for these knives were hand-ground by Bob Engath. So beyond the hype and plastic there is a good blade in there anyhow.

Regarding the Bob Engath question: please read the last link that I posted above. That issue is addressed there, but to sum it up, Bob Engath supposedly ground 100 blades by hand. The ones that have a blade ground by Engath are over $300, although no one gives a specific amount. The regular knife does not have a blade ground by Engath.

Speaking of specific amounts, Automatic posted a link that says the knife sells for $249. When you follow the link that I refered to above, you see that the company spokesman who posted an advertisement in the reviews section indeed said that "the Hissatsu retails for $249". However, go to http://www.ancientedge.com/prod03.htm and you see that the retail is $299. The company produces exactly one product, and their spokesman doen't know what the retail value of it is? Sorry Maddog, but these guys take the cake.

I lived in Japan for a couple of years. I've seen literally hundreds of period blades and have a degree in Japanese history. I've never seen a short blade with a grotesquely exaggerated point or grind like that. even ones that were made from broken Katanas or Waikazashis. Just my $0.02
