finally finished another one. the second one i was working on has been put on hold until my brass comes in from TKS. i just went ahead and finished up #3. handle is axis deer antler. blade is 1080. i know the HT came out good because a file skips right across it and its holding an edge very well. i even took a piece of leather and cemented it to a 2x4 that is a foot long and rub a crap load of white compound on it and stropped it. slices thru paper like it wasnt even there. blade is approx. 3" long. handle is approx. 3.5" long. well what you think about it?

so how did i do on finishing up the antler?

Looks good... Glad to see you're being so prolific already! Are you going to put a sheath on it?

possibly. not sure yet. this is the ultimate skinners brother that i showed yall about a month ago. you think that will save alot of backstrap and tenderloin and get into those nice tight places when cleaning a kill? HEHEHE!!!

I like the blade shape and grind, however, I have never liked antler handles such as this one. It is my own preference, so please do not take offense to that. Looks like a handy little knife though! Keep at it and watch your skills improve! -Matt-

I like it. I would have been inclined to wait for the brass though. I small brass guard would have really set it off nicely.

Good job Jacob. I do like the handle, reminds me of a bodice dagger I made for a friend of mine.

BBBB Beaver stop copying me!!!! HEHEHEHE!!!! :D :jerkit:

thanks for the comments guys. the brass is for another knife which is alot bigger than this one.

Pimpinsquee,

Love that knife and you better believe it'll skin great. Reminds me of the "Patch Knives" my day used to make when he was into the buckskinning thing many years ago.

Haven't tried any antler or bone yet but I'm starting to get the hankering.

Keep it up.

Charles

thanks Charles. this one is part of the 2 knife ultimate skinning combo. this knife is designed for making your starting hole for the gut hook and to get into those tight places. designed to get between joints and stuff to save as much meat as you can. ill be working on the skinner next week. then ill have a sheath made to hold both and then i have some buddies at a taxidermist who are willing to test the designs out for me. i cant wait to have my knives tested by a professional. HEHEHEHE!!!!

thanks blub. now that i look at the knife my grinds are getting better. i actually didnt notice the difference. also my HTing has become a lot better. still working out the tempering with this toaster oven. its almost wherei want it. just not quite there.

Thats 2 now get another one done and try and make it better than this one, then do the next one better than that one and so on and so on....
Bruce

i just finished Hting a 4th blade. its basically the same blade as that one only wider. basically trying to figure out which size would work better.

I don't care a lot for that type of handle either but I make them on occasion
:) keep grinding your doing Good buba

I like it fine, and I personally don't like messing with 'naturalistic' designs. it's sharp blade growing out of an antler, a brass guard would be jarring.

Rub some of that heat treating goodness on me, I'm hopiing to do some L6 and 1080 blades this weekend!

koyote, my experience with the 1080 showed me that once you get it just past non magnetic (kinda dark orange) then just quench it. i do one normalize on each blade before i quench it. for the tempering i did it at 375. IG taught me a trick when using a toaster oven to temper add pieces of firebrick in the oven to help it retain the heat and create an even heat along the blade. works like a charm. as we speak im tempering another blade that is almost identical to the one in the pic above. its just a little wider. i hope this helps you out with your 1080.

im working im working. HEHEHEHE!!! by the time im yalls age my butt hole will be so big you could park a semi in it from all the boots yall put in my butt. :D HEHEHEHE!!!!

Doing good JR.  Now stop calling me three times a day or was it four yesterday and make more knives. HEHEHEHE!!!!
