hey guys i just got a Cold Steel Tactical Kobun Tanto good knife so far. but i want to take the shine off the blade...possible paint it? the thing is like a mirror and i would like to tone it down. any idea would really help.

you could hit it with some spray paint for a cheap fix, but it will wear if you use it alot. easy to re-do though...

you could scuff it up with some 200 grit sandpaper, but it will still reflect light, it just won't do it so clearly.

if it was carbon i would say put a patina on it, but its not so that's a no-go.

i guess you could sandblast it. you might be able to talk someone in an autobody shop into doing it for you...tape off the edge first or it is going to need some reworking...and i don't know if that would damage the handle.

i guess painting it would be your best bet
 
There are some bad-ass acids available that will put a pretty thorough haze on just about any stainless suitable for knife usage. Naval Jelly comes to mind, but I'm not 100% on that, so hopefully someone will come along to answer for sure.
