Here is my latest. I always wanted an EK Commando, and lately I've just been making all the knives I wanted (much cheaper) A few mods from it's relative 5.4375" blade 10" OAL Made from a Nicholson file tempered down @ 500f for 2 hrs. 650# paracord wrap w/ 3M grip tape to keep wrap secure. Brass crossguard, cold blued flats on blade. I call it Ridgeback Knives' Plan "B"...Wotcha think?

Somehow in resizing the image the blade edge developed a serrated look... A fig newton of my computer's imagination... edges are sharp and smooth.

Very nice job !
I have a question, you stated YOU *TEMPERED DOWN* the file.

The purpose was to take some of the *brittleness* out of the file i believe?

And is that the only thing youve done to affect the hardness of it ?

I ask because im making some file knives myself and what youve done sounds like a cheap ez way to get a good knife from my files.

Thanks ! Bryce

Uh... I am no expert but I somehow thought that the proper way to make any knife goes like this:
Find stock.
If hard (like a file), anneal it before working on it.
Work on it now that it is soft.
Harden it (bring to desired heat, quench, etc...)
Temper (to make it less brittle, 2 x 2h at 250ºC)
Finish the blade to desired grit
Attach the handle
Shape and finish the handle (unless it is paracord)
Refinish the blade (it always gets scratched while working on the handle no matter what).
Sharpen
Enjoy :D

If that "tempering down @ 500f for 2 hrs." is the only HT you have done on that knife, chances are you are only half way trhough. Maybe you just didn't tell us about the whole process and you indeed went through them all... but I can't tell.

The knife looks great anyway. Keep up the good work,
Mikel

I was taught that little trick by someone on this site. Works like a champ. I've done thin knives (like the one in my avatar) great flex, nice hard edge. Same w/ this one. Thanks for the feedback!

I was always told the proper way is what works... in this case I have had bombproof results in durability, edgeholding ability, flexibility, and sharpness. I use only Nicholson files which are a known quality 1095 @500F x2hrs This works for my knives. I do have to take my time throuought the process, I work barehanded to monitor the friction induced temp. and keep a slack bucket nearby so as not to corrupt my heat-treat. I don't have forge capabilities so I have to be a little geurilla in my process. Until I can afford one this is how I can provide quality products w/o a lot of capital. I do however anneal my handles keeping th blade in cool water and watching the heat line. I let the "straw color" get just below the ricasso. This allows me to clean up my tang/handle with a file and allows holes to be drilled w/ ease. I appreciate your concern tho.

Thanks Sulsa for the info.
I,ll give that a try on the one im starting now.

how does that guard fit?
also can we get an in hand shot?

Can't wait for my knife!!

Brass crossguard hammered in place w/ 2ton epoxy for added strength.

Petah: did you get my e-mail?
