Becker, Boker, Buck and Emerson content....
I'm not sure how many of y'all know, but I get my ocassional spending allowance from peddling knives to my North Slope brethren. I hardly ever make a profit from it, really. I'm kinda like the crack dealer that started sampling too much of his own product.... One knife for stock, two for me...one for stock, two for me....
Anyhoo, I got in a new shipment yesterday and figured I'd share a few first impressions of them with y'all.
One is a Buck 111. Silver bolsters, ironwood scales, and pretty much like a 110 but nicer. It's still a classic, but prettier. It came with a scary sharp edge, a needle point, a nice sheath, and all the extra weight that we have come to love and expect from these things. It's hard not to pocket this one.
I also got one of the new Emerson A-100's. I personally, pretty much associate Emerson with tactical, high speed tough guy yada, yada stuff that I really aint into, but this one....it's not very Emersonish. For one thing it's UGLY. and if there's one thing I've loved about most Emersons, its the flowing curves and nice design. This one is flat ugly, and it's appearance alone will put you to sleep. Having said that, it's got a nice 3.5" spear point double ground blade, a tight lock, damn good fit and finish, and a design that is pure function. It's a nice blade, a handle and not much else, which is why I'm really loving it. It's so efficient, and minimalist.....It actually reminds me of the folding Mora thread, except for the price tag. If this one doesn't sell soon, it'll be mine this summer.
Becker Necker/ BK 11. The good- I like the coating. It's a smoother black, low friction type of finish rather than that scaly, rough over the top stuff Camillus used. It feels better in hand, and I wouldn't feel the need to remove it. (I have in the past, because I do feel that it was rough enough to complicate finer tasks performed with the knife. the blade seems rugged and like it'd be a nice addition to a mini kit or BOB.
Otherwise...I'm not impressed. The handle on this thing sucks. It's edgy, sharp, and has a three finger hold that might be comfortable for most mutants, but not me. I know the in thing to do is wrap it with paracord, but it's bad enough I don't even know how much that would help it. The knife felt awful in my big ole bear paws, in my wifes dainty lil' forepaws and my sons little bear paws.
The sheath is okay I guess. It definitely has decent retention. Overall it requires more force in both directions than I'd like, and it's not as tec-lock friendly as it could be. Easily rectified with a Dewalt, but annoying none the less. It also didn't even come with any ball chain, but rather a couple lengths of Para-cord. Not to beat up on the Becker line, I'm a big fan of the Beckers overall, I just happen to think that this one needs a little help.
The surprise mention here is a Boker Nealy fixed blade. about a 3 1/4" spear point flat ground blade with the Bud Nealy MCS system to carry it anywhere and any time. In the shower, at a wedding, while spending quality time with the wife, etc. It's a neat little knife, and just the right size to be handy, accessible, but still pull a real days work. The sheath system is extremely nice, and I'm cool with the 440-C blade It's a nicely designed, very versatile little blade that I think would be very comfortable on a hiking trip. It feels good in every grip, and it's got very clean efficient lines. I can even tell you it's damn handy in the kitchen, cuts fuzz stick, cord, plastic, etc. real well. The reason I can tell ya' is that this one didn't make it into inventory, and is comfortably riding on my hip as we speak. It is now my new EDC. I'm heading back to Prudhoe on Sunday, so we'll see how it likes the oilfield soon. (that's been the death of a few knives, actually)
Just figured I'd share a few first impressions, for folks that can't get thier paws on 'em and share a bit of the stuff that pics don't communicate too well.
And just so no one thinks I'm spamming or somethin'...I don't sell on the internet. (there aint no way I could compete here, and I'm way too busy, broke, and disinterested for all that craziness)
Hope these mini- reviews can be helpful to some of y'all.
