New knives today

Is the 342 still comfy in the hand or is it a tad small? I like and use the full grip on my 347, and am thinking now maybe I should pick up another 347 :D

If you really like the feel of the 347, I'd stick with that size. The 342 feels pretty small in my hand.

I forgot to mention or take a picture of the leather sheath that comes with the Ergo folder. The sheath is a dark, reddish brown and seems to have been designed so that it can be carried horizontally.

The problem is that it's stitched so tight that I haven't found any belt that I own that will fit through it that way. :thumbdn:

Best way I can answer that is to say to compare it to the Rosewood Kalinga Pro Folder with S30V at a catalog price of $164 (2009). Now THAT knife looks and feels like a $100+ knife for sure. The little Ergo Pro at $170, not so much.

There is a lot to be said for just a flat out good looking knife. Thats why the custom shop is in business. A stag handled 420hc powder cote blade wont perform any better than a $30 wallyworld 110 but sure looks alot more impressive when you pull it out to show a friend.

The biggest reason I asked is if you were very impressed by the appearance, it might sway my opinion as I trust your judgement of a "good lookin" knife. However, if after reflection, you arent that impressed, I like the look of the black/green avid and for almost 1/2 price, I'd be all over it:) Thanks for the input.

Thanks Kevin, but just think about it. Something (or someone) that I may think is just drop dead gorgeous, may be butt ugly to the next guy.:D

But if I find a pattern that I really like, I usually try to get every version that I can get hold of. I don't believe that will happen with the Ergo.

That may very well be true, but I know that you buy knives by asthetics and I have seen the knives that you buy because you consider them good looking. I have rarely, if ever disagreeded with your taste and therefore consider you to be an excellent knife "guinea pig":p:)

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate your confidence in my judgement. :)

You know, I've gone back and reread the description of the handle on the Ergo and it says:
"Glass reinforced nylon with TPE rubber & Rosewood Dymondwood", but I swear that the "Rosewood" looks and feels like it's molded hard rubber. It just really looks like the handle is all molded in one piece with no insert.

I may be way off base, but that's how it appears to me.

Thank you Dave! I appreciate it! I think I will be looking for a backup 347 then!!!

Thanks again!

The little Vantage 342 is more pocket knife size. The handle length is 1/4" shorter and opened overall length is 5/8" shorter than a 301 just to give a comparison.

It's a very cool little knife and I think it would be really great for a kid (a responsible kid).

Now how cool would that be! A Father and Son (or Daughter) set, 347 for Dad, 342 for the whippersnapper. Buck should come out with a combo set!

The jury is still out on the Ergo and Vantage at this time. I just need to save my money up and try to fine a Kalinga pro folding hunter before they are all gone. I know they are a lot higher and a lot heavier, I just want one. Then I will try to get a Vantage.

I am still torn between the 2 Vantages....

Maybe I need to just get another 347 and a 342....

The 347 is a fantastic knife, the 342 has to be pretty good also, if not I can give it to one of the kids. :D

Thanks for the idea Dave! :)

:thumbup:Thanks for your help Dave!! ;)

I need one too now!

Probably like I need another hole in my head LMAO!!!

As I posted before, I ordered a few new Bucks and they came today. The first two are the new Ergo Folder Pro and one of the new smaller Vantage Pros. I really haven't had the time to photograph them or do much else with them, so this is just my initial impressions.

The little Vantage Pro is just a downsized version of the big one and other than that there's not much to be said that hasn't already been said. It's smaller size will probably appeal to a lot of folks.

The Ergo folder? Hmmm, the jury's still out. My first impression is that I don't like the feel of the rubber handle, but I'm sure that others will like it. It will more than likely be easy to hold onto if you are using it for messy jobs, skinning and such. What appears to be rosewood inserts are actually just colored rubber, not wood.

As far as value goes or bang for your buck, unless the Ergo pattern just works better for your application, I think the Vantage Pro has it beat hands down. The Vantage Pro's (larger one) catalog price is $95, the Ergo Folder's is $170. They both have S30V blades, so is the Ergo folder worth $75 more? No way, at least not in my opinion. It just doesn't look or feel like a $170 knife (Ebay price delivered, $115.50).

I'll try to get pictures taken and posted this week end.

psssst .... the Ergo pro inserts are Dymondwood :D

Yeah, that's what I read (see post #27), but man you could have (and did) fool me. It just looks like the same stuff as the handle, just a different color. It pretty much feels the same too. Do they put the Dymondwood insert in the mold and mold the rubber around it? I just can't see a joint there.

Come on Jeff, get them to put an all Dymondwood handle on some!:D

I have been carrying my new vantage pro 342 for 2 days now and you were right! :D

It is a great knife, but what I liked most was the new box!!!

It is quite a bit smaller than I was expecting, a tad too small for my hands, but I like it for pocket carry better. It is also better around the sheeple :D
I have a 346 on order yet too now, (thanks Dave)LOL! I have to try the sandvik steel.

It is a very well built knife and blade centers perfectly! I think Buck has another winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
