Wow I was perusing www.leatherman.com 's website and see they have four new hunting knives out,one series has cm154 while the other series has s30v.
I also did a web check a and it appears that Cabela's has them for sale already.........prices look good and they have some unique features, such as a built in sharpening stone, bone saw and built in gut hooks.
There are four models two fixed and two folders.
Leatherman also has a cool drag and drop comparison feature for their knives so you can match them up to see what you want in a knife

Their "fixed blades" seem to do an awful lot of folding.

Interesting line of knives though. Good blade steel and a nice way to pack hunting tools in a compact package.

I agree vivi I am a hunting knife collector and I think that steens will find its way into my collection for no other purpose than to have. That saw is a great incorporation into the knife, I use a sak saw to cut through the pelvic bone so I dont ruin my knife tips. Not big on the guthook but overall it seems like very nice package with good steel. Still cant figure how you call it a "fixed blade" hunting knife except the blade is one continued piece of steel to that guthook, though it still folds but..... oh well.

My only complaint is that I have heard that Leatherman tends to endorse anti-hunting and anti-gun politicians. I've chosen not purchase any of their products because of this.

It does seem odd that leatherman, with its anti-gun stance, would market a knife to hunters. I don't think I'll be buying one.

They were quite vocal about it last election too. AR15.com had some memo from upon high in the company detailing its stance, contributions and a general FU to anyone not in line with them.

It does look like theyve improved on the line. They used to only make 400s and now the S30Vs and 154CMs are topping the chart.

Wow I didnt know about the anti-hunting stance they had. That does change my views and opinions of them, I will have to look into this more.

Wow, great innovation. I looked at the older knives at SHOT this years and wasnt blown away, but this is nice. I would like to see a LM with just a main blade in 154 and a woodsaw.

Yeah I would bet it would be a big seller!

I recall seeing a letter signed by Tim Leatherman and several other big dogs in the "outdoor" gear business. The letter stated they all endorsed Kerry/Edwards in the last election due to their position on clean air and environment. I also recall seeing a letter from Leatherman after he started to get some flack for signing. This letter said that neither he nor his Leatherman company had given campaign fund to anyone, he went on to say that the first letter only meant that Kerry/Edwards would be getting his vote. I do not recall anything anti-gun or anti-hunting about this. There could very well be something more but it could also be that his stated positon of voting for Kerry/Edwards due to environment issues was reported in other media as being anti-gun.

for the record, look at ALL of the signitories:

I get VERY frustrated that numerous outdoorsmen (and women) of my acquaintance have singled out Leatherman. IMNSHO - it's all or nothing or you are a hypocrite.

Dear Fellow Americans:

We are business leaders in the outdoor industry and we have come together because we can no longer be silent. Outdoor businesses depend on abundant and available recreation opportunities so our customers can enjoy outdoor activities. In return, outdoor businesses employ over a million Americans, contribute $18 billion to the U.S. economy and work together to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to the 149 million Americans who love the great American outdoors.

In our opinion increasing the number of venues for active outdoor recreation, staunchly protecting the environment, bolstering recreation and conservation funding to our public land agencies and reducing health care costs go hand-in-hand. They are essential for the health and well being of the outdoor industry and its customers.

Senators John Kerry and John Edwards share our values and goals. They know that promoting active outdoor recreation promotes good health. They know that proactively protecting and supporting public lands for recreational use means future generations will enjoy them too. They know that improving the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink is not negotiable for any industry or business in America. They know that health care costs will continue to increase unless we are united in reducing obesity in America.

John Kerry and John Edwards are committed to preserving our national parks for the benefit of current and future generations. President Bush has promoted policies that break that commitment and endanger the future sustainability of our national parks. President Bush’s policies have severely under-funded our national parks resulting in rampant understaffing, site closures, elimination of visitor education programs and neglected cultural and natural resource preservation, demonstrating indifference towards unsafe trails, unclear facilities and the growing shortage of safety staff.

As importantly, the Bush administration has rolled back basic environmental protections that undermine parks including:

- Rolling back Clean Air Act requirements that ensure visibility and healthy visits to our national parks.

- Eliminating federal protections for our public lands that will allow mining, logging and development in national forests.

- Slashing the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which enables the National Park Service to acquire new land and protect and enhance existing parks facilities.

In contrast John Kerry and John Edwards have a plan to protect the scenic landscapes and vistas for the appreciation of future generations through rigorous enforcement of clean air and water regulations and will preserve the resources that embody our cultural heritage through committed funding for parks operations by:

Increasing the operating budget of the National Park Service by $600 million will put our parks back on the path toward recovery and restoration. We will pay for this important objective by modernizing the sale of mineral rights and using the revenue generated to increase the operating budgets of our national parks.

We know that Senator Kerry is a champion on the environmental issues that are central to our industry and customers. We also believe that Senator Kerry's economic and health care policies will keep our businesses competitive and health care affordable.

Therefore, we the undersigned are proud to endorse Senator Kerry as the next President of the United States.

Sincerely,

I agree. I though it odd at the time this came down that people were saying they would boycott Letherman but the CEO of Vibram also signed and I heard no one say they would stop wearing vibram soled boots.

I would also like to apologize to kapt kopter for this thread drift in which I played a part. :o

Oh, yeah. Thread drift.

What I STARTED to post: BTW, I don't like this any more than the "revolver..."

Ok, I read the list of signataries, how many of them are marketing a hunting knife? As far as I know I'm not buying equipment from any of them. What these people forget is that if you ban guns and hunting, you lose the majority of your funds for management from loss of license sales. There may not be any direct anti-hunting strategy by Leatherman, but he was supporting a candidate that was clearly anti-gun and huinting.

Everyone is entitled to their own political opinion but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the 3 reasons listed werent really the driving factor. Its a horrible thing to do but stereotyping based on which state theyre based out of shows a trend.

I could honestly care less who's flag you salute but that letter sounds like an excuse instead of a reason.

I do believe there was another letter as well from within leatherman. It could have been BS though too. Obviously thats not uncommon on the internet.

Good grief I just wanted to talk about some new hunting knives.....thanks for the apology Thomason......no offense taken......where does it say that all of Leatherman is anti hunting?......In fact I bet quite a number of their employees hunt and or fish and last time I checked the product was made in the U.S.
I am sorry I even posted now

Gee who wants clean air and water anyway? Meh let the pollution bring on 2 headed deer, now you can get 2 sets on antlers for 1 bullet!

If were a CEO I would have signed it too, and then made a huge donation to the NRA.

They do have some cool innovations. I guess time will tell if they are gimmicks or not. Bully to them for bringing something new to market.

Thanks for posting that list. I've copied into my files, and it will come in handy for deciding upon future purchases. Never bought anything from Leatherman before, and not likely will ever. Only one company on the entire list do I own anything from, and that's Vibram. Time for a boot inspection. I don't care how good a product a company turns out, if they promote something that I oppose, I exercise my right to choose not to use their products.
