New life for old Maglites

I'm tempted to get one of the 1k lumen ones, but dangit! I can get FIVE nite-ize modded mags for the price of just ONE module!

terralux is the way to go, i modded my mini and it was impressive, but i gave it away to a friend last year because i have better options. If you make your way over to CPF, be prepared to possibly start spending alot of money on lights. It's an equally fun addiction. :D

you aint lyin'

If you have a solitare, I HIGHLY recommend an LED replacement for it. It is brighter, and it stays at that output level until the battery runs out, unlike the 30 minutes of good light & then steadily worsening output from the standard bulb. The only place I found for those replacements was ebay, but your google-fu may be better than mine.

so how do those drop ins work on a maglite?.....do u have to change the type of batteries u use or do anything else to the flashlight?.....and if u drop it in...where the heck do u drop it!.....i have no idea about flashlights but i would think there isn't too much room in their with the batteries to fit anything else?......an anybody explain how they work to a non flashlight maniac.....ryan

Terralux makes several different styles.
The simple one for a 2D type maglite just looks like an incandescent bulb, so you take the bulb out, put the LED module in, and turn it on.
The simple one for a mini-maglite works basically the same way, but it is a little larger. The mini has a small incandescent bulb with 2 small wires coming out of it, and plugs into the end of the light. The LED module has a circuit board with the LED mounted on it, and 2 small wires projecting out the bottom. You take the old bulb out, plug in the LED module, and you are basically done. The LED module needs more room to fit into the light so they give you a new reflector in the kit. Take out the old reflector, put in the new one, put it back together and you are ready to go.

Terralux makes a big one with 3 LED's that looks like the one linked to just above. I've read their instructions and I think it works similarly- take out old parts and put in new parts.

Huh. It's still going.

Yeah, I've been to CPF. The most recent "gear fetish" I've had is for pens, but I suppose lights aren't too far away.

The only problem with this is that I haven't found a LED for my solitaire. Apparently, nobody makes a drop-in for a light that small.

There are so many good, cheap, AAA, LED, flashlights out there these days, no one is going to make much money selling a drop in for a Solitare.

i guess im spending the extra money and been buying the LED Maglites straight from the factory. silly me LOL

I have a custom dropin that someone made a few years ago. It is not real bright even though it has a Luxeon LED.

I am carrying a Fenix LD01 now. It is as small or smaller than the Solitaire, and very bright. You can buy them as cheap as about $40. Fenix has the E05 for half that cost and it seems to be a better deal, not as bright but probably bright enough.

Great read guys, I've been wondering about this topic exactly. Having gone to the sites listed I've learned a lot and will be placing an order soon. If I get in done in reasonable time I'll post an update.
Cheers

terralux is the best way to go ,,they also have a clickie tailcap , then get a replacement glass lens = more light output !

The LED minimaglite is rated at 77 Lumens. That tiny little Fenix LD01 that I pictured runs on a single AAA battery and puts out the exact same output.

Nothing really wrong with the mag LED's though. They are readily available, well made, and have good output. You could get better performance with other brands such as Fenix but they of course cost a lot more.

i buy the Maglites for LEDs that run on AA's and D's (and yes i have converted older incandescent lights to LED as well), but all my other lights are LED Surefires(E2D LED is my EDC).
those are the only brands i buy...they have NEVER let me down, so i stick with what works

So I picked up a Terralux drop in for my Solitaire off ebay and I had to do a bunch of dremeling to get it to fit and use an o ring since there was still a gap between the bezel and the body of the light. Seems pretty bright but its not dark out yet so we'll see. I know there are other lights out there but hey, since I haven't really needed the light since I put it on my keys the $10 shipped seemed like a good experiment and I didn't get the Fenix I asked for for my birthday :)
