New Lockback from GEC

Smallmouth, is this the exact same size frame as the #73 Scout? I've seen the Scout listed at 3-3/4" and the Lockback at 3-7/8", but they look the same. Does anyone have both to compare them side by side?

I do own a few #73s, but I haven't compared them. As far as I know, the #72 uses the same frame (hence the #7n). Besides, the difference between 3-3/4 and 3-7/8 is only 1/8". :p

I just got the 72 lockback in the mail today. It is a pretty knife, but has lateral play when locked up - and up-down play also.
I can't live with that.
Now, the question is what to do?
Send it back to the vendor for a replacement or to GEC?
I'd like to get the knife right from the start - but can't live with a loose blade.

The knife distributor will take it back for a store credit. I wonder if you are more likely to get tight lockup on the liner lock models.
Does anyone know?
I really don't care for up-down and side play. There really shouldn't be side play in a knife like this.
I could send it back and get a replacement, but I'd hate to waste my time, money, and bug the vendor.
I really like my knives to lock up tight.

I plan to send it back, but the vendor said that he doesn't open new boxes to check knives. That seems strange to me. I'd like a lockback that locks tight...but not one with side-to-side play and poor lockup.
I plan to call - ksf - in the morning.

Send it to GEC and they will take care of it in a flash. Or shoot it to me and I will tighten it up for you. It is not a defect per se; but no sense living with something that drives you crazy....

We don't typically open and check knives because we deal with vendors that do that before they get to us.

When you send it back to us, just send it with a note that says you need us to check the new one back to you. We'll do it.

Thanks Derrick - I really like the knife and would like another - but with a tight lockup. I'll include the note.

No problem. I need to go through all of them and make sure we have what we think. :)

I am guessing it is just part of the start of any new product in the line.

None of the GEC Liner locks I own have ANY lateral play so it alarms me that their lockbacks are having it.

Mike - Thanks for the offer of help. I just sent the knife back to KSF this afternoon.
I don't like to trouble them, but I don't want to use a knife with a blade that doesn't lock
up tight.

I just got the replacement today. Thanks Derrick. The knife blade locks up tight, the blade is sharp enough, the blade is centered properly - and I can live with it - fine.

Not the best picture ever taken, but I had just gotten done making dinner and thought I'd grab a quick snap:

Been carrying this knife a good bit lately.

That looks great! Is that a natural patina or forced?

Thanks! I like to think that it's encouraged. ;) I use it to prepare dinner and then let it sit until after dinner before wiping it down. I slice a lot of limes for margaritas, too.
