New locking SAKs coming?

From a Reddit post here:

There’s a photo in the comments of them at a Swiss shop, so it seems real.

Maybe this will tamp down on all the, “victorinox doesn’t innovate” talk. Though, I’ll be honest, I’m not 100% sure I like them.

I do like the addition of the nail file to what appears to be a 93mm frame. Though the loss of the awl would be a big bummer.

Don’t personally need/want the package opener.

I can see why the lock would be popular, but I don’t need it either. And the proof will be how difficult it is to use, especially if the backspring is as strong as the current 93mm.

I don’t like the skeletonized scales. At all. Talk about a lint magnet. And without being able to take it apart to clean, if this allows more dirt into the pivots it could be a real issue.

Either way, I’m genuinely interested to get one of these in hand.

I don’t mind the look of the pictured knife but the fact it still has Rivets rather than screws looks dated to me.

I think it’s time they upped their game and used Torx screws for their Alox models. After all, many customisers have proved it can be done and look the better for it IMO.

I know it would be popular, though I don’t see the appeal personally.

Having modded a few SAKs, it’s often not trivial to reassemble them with the backspring tension. Even with torx, assembly and disassembly is non-trivial. Plus you need the tools.

To me, the beauty of the pins is that I can adjust them without torx drivers. All you need is a flat surface and a hammer and a couple of taps can tighten up a loose pivot. Something much more easy to improvise if you’re “in the field” without more specialized tools handy.

Some good points, but Torx bolts do look nice (at least to me, and much nicer than brass rivets) and some folks probably wouldn’t want to take them apart anyway. I’ve got lots of knives held together with screws that I’ve never taken apart.

Fair point. The aesthetics don’t bother me either way. Torx would certainly be popular. That along with a locking blade seem to be very common requests.

Locking blades are a must - except we can’t EDC them in the UK. 🥲 🤬
I’m in the US, so am able to carry a locking blade, but almost never do. Don’t really see the need. But I believe people should have the choice.

I am curious to see how the locking blade works in real life on these models. If the back spring tension and “snap” are the same as the regular 93mm, I could see it being a bit risky to close while holding the liner lock to the side. Unless they changed the tang shape, or added a half stop or something.

Interesting, but a hard pass for me.
1) Other than the "package opener", same tool set as the Pioneer, which has the much more useful can opener.
A blade can be used to open those 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 clam packs/hang packs, and Amazon (etal) packages without damaging what you are trying to get out. To me the "package opener" is a impractical blade just taking up the space a more useful blade or tool could occupy.

2a) No scissors. I use the scissors pretty much daily. For me they are a "necessity".
2b) No side tools. Admittedly not everyone likes or uses them. I do ... especially the toothpick.

3) It is/will be unquestionably so far out of my price range, it mite's well be at the far end of the Andromeda Galaxy.

Nope. I'll stick with my Huntsman for every day use, and my Hercules on days I know I will need the pliers.
(O.K. I'll admit a 111 mm Hunter or a Hunter XT, and a Ranger Grip 79 are on my pre-owned shopping list. Yes, I am aware I will probably never have need for the belly unzipper blade on the Hunter/Hunter XT. I still want one though. 😊)

For 1) I agree completely. I don’t understand the point of the package opener. And an edge that sharp on a tool with a screwdriver? If that closes on you while using the SD, that’ll be a nasty wound.

For 2) it appears there is also an “X” model with scissors as well as a blade only model.

Y? 😳
Out of my roughly 115 "pocket knives" (does the (brass/German Silver/rare copper and wood Buck 110 and Old Timer 7OT count as a "pocket knife" since they are normally carried in a belt sheath?) I have 4 "modern's" with a locking blade. "Traditional's" only my nine Buck 110's, a 4 pin 7OT equipped with a 1095 blade, and a combo knife - Slingshot/Catapult, have a locking blade.
OH!!! almost forgot I also have the ratchet lock Cold Steel KUDU, and a Old Bear friction folder with a can't remove optional to use lock similar to Opinel's. (I removed the lock ring on all my Opinel equipped with the lock ring. I never used it, anyway.)

1,000 amens regarding the "package opener." Hate 'em! Learn how to use a pocketknife, soccer moms!

Non-locking has kept me from being interested in regular sized SAK's. The Classic is all i ever had. My multi of choice is a Gerber with a solid lock. Some of the fixes it's pulled me out of in nearly 3 decades? If it'd been a slip joint they'd call me stumpy.

As it turns out, the timing could be good for Vic to sell me this.

My very first reaction to this was, is this a joke?

If it is real and not a hoax, then Victorinox has lost their collective minds. I hate it. it seems like a castrated version of a SAK type pocket knife. I hate that package opener, and echo the sentiment that soccer moms need to learn to open packages with a knife blade. This is an exercise in futility and I hope Victorinox comes to their senses and puts a stop to this nonsense before they take too much a bath on a bad idea.

I'm totally with afishhunter on this!

I think I’ve opened a can with a SAK maybe twice in over 30 years of knife use, but I use that tool all the time. It’s basically a metal fingernail.
THIS!

It makes a great staple remover, and is a wonder on those pistachio nut shells that have barely a crack opening. The Vic can openers pops them right open with a little twist. It's not bad on opening a can when the sister in law's electric can opener goes belly up as she's making dinner and a can of Tomato paste is needing to be opened.

This is such a hilariously poor take.

Victorinox is the biggest knife maker in the world, and the second biggest? No idea who they are, but it's not close. Victorinox has sold millions upon millions of knives. However, they've also been selling the same product year in and year out for decades. What harm does it do to come up with new models for those fans who want something new? In fact, I am one of the folks who enjoys the new package opener tool, and was glad to see the can opener replaced, because you know, oddly enough I haven't needed a can opener on a SAK since roughly 1998, the end of my Scouting days. Cans these days have pull tabs, or if you're car camping, then you're bringing an actual can opener. The new package tool, I've used in several ways, it's just a more useful tool in my experience.

Also, there are a lot of SAK modification folks who put pocket clips on SAKs and those seem to be a popular mod. So, this whole "they need to come to their senses!" monologue is really rather silly. I am betting they know more about their target market than you do, and they're going to sell quite a few of these.

For those who don't like them? Hey, good deal, go buy another Tinker or Camper, they're available literally everywhere. 🤷

Never opened a can with a SAK or MT. Dedicated can opener is better and I have used a p38 once or twice. I don't need a bottle opener either.

I'm happy to see them trying to innovate.

Agreed. This package opener tool is objectively better in an EDC role than a can opener has ever been (at least in my use case, maybe there are folks here who are opening cans the hard way every day! LOL). I am looking forward to being able to clip a SAK to my pocket without having to pay out for an aftermarket modification or just leave it floundering in the bottom of my pocket like they do now.
