New Lunchbox Knife

Opinel certainly do make a number of fillet knives.

I have a small one in stainless with African hardwood handle, dark colour not like the standard Opinel 'orange' Good for pairing lemons or limes for zest I also have on in blonde coloured buffalo horn in stainless. wicked thin blade and 12cms closed-just under 5" about 23cm just under 9" open. Comes in a very nice oak box too. Opinel's website might be in English too these days.

Here is my No. 8. I'm going to give the linseed oil treatment to my No. 10, thanks for the information Jackknife.

Gotta love those moras.

I'm glad to see some other people here who appreciate and use Opinels! I was given my first Opinel by a friend of mine who was showing me his collection of knives one day several years ago. I had never seen one before, but that dirty, old, hard used No. 7 he had intrigued me, so he gave it to me. He had bought it for very little at a flea market he said, and judging by the amount and color of dirt in it and on it it must have been used by a South Georgia farmer or one of his field hands. The blade had been sharpened enough to be a little slimmer than the new ones, but it still has many years of use left in it. I scrubbed it out good with soapy water and a brush, then let it dry for a week and coated it twice with Birchwood Casey brand gunstock finish from Wal-Mart. I didn't sand it or try to make it look new, I just wanted to protect it from further wear and tear. Since getting that No. 7 I've bought quite a few other Opinels in a variety of sizes and styles, and the best source of them I've found is Smoky Mountain Knife Works at www.eknifeworks.com because of their large selection and excellent prices. They have sold an apparently new model for about a year now, and I really like it. For a lunchbox knife I don't think you could do better (unless you get a Victorinox Solo, same source, same price). Opinel's new model is called the Garden Knife and it has a stainless steel spear point blade in a much slimmer handle. It's either a No. 8 or about the size of a No. 8, too. Once you see that handle and blade shape you will have to have one. Now, would you believe $8 + S&H? What a deal! :D

Gotta love those moras.

That bottom one with the wood handle looks like the one I've had for years. I love the laminated carbon blade!

Thats just the strait carbon blade..... but I have the laminated on out in the garage. It's my garden knife. I have Moras stashed all over the place. Every once in awhile I'll be cleaning out a nook or cranny and it's like finding a $20.00 in a pair of jeans you hardly wear. "Theres my Clipper?!":D
