This is my first post so please go easy on me guys. I jst stopped by a new knife shop on my way home and got the new Kershaw Leek and a Benchmade 720 in satin. I have wanted the BM for a long time and the Leek was kind of like an impulse buy. Please tell me what you think of these two knives. Your opinions are greatly appreciated and respected, as I looked here for most of my info before buying.

Welcome!

I don't own a leek, but I think it's just a fancy chive and I do have one of those! It came out of the box SCARY RAZOR sharp! It flicks open most excelently! It locks up tight!

I don't carry it around as it is just a bit too small for my very large paws. But it is a hoot to play with!

I don't own a Benchmade 720 but do own a 350 with a Black Blade. You did very well by going Satin blade. I will NEVER get another black blade! I believe the 720 is Axis lock yes? I have handled a few and can't believe how slick they are!!! Open for the thought of it, and locked open until you by God want it closed!

The best compromise knife I own (and recommend highly!) is a Kershaw Ken Onion Vapor. Big enough to do work, small enough to not terrify sheeple, frame lock solid, pretty doggone sharp outta the box!

Best part? You get a few pennies back from a $20 at Walmart!!! I grabbed two Japan built ones while I could, but I have a China built Vapor II that only came a little less sharp, otherwise just as good (well except for the word 'China')

Anyway there you have it from the cheapest dude on these boards!!!

Again, WELCOME!!!

I have a BM720 satin/plain and I think it's a great knife. I like the blade shape and I get it nice and sharp. To me the axis lock wasn't as easy moving as the axis on the BM942 I had in the pass-around or the Griptilians that I've tried. How's yours? I got mine used so I was just wondering if other people have a difference experience. It was one of the earlier axis locks. I like that it's one of the few axis locks that comes tip-down. Choice.

If the Leek is anything like the Chive then it's a good buy.

Welcome to the forums...

Don't have a Leek :D  , but I do have the 720. Out of a boatload of axis-locks that I have, I would have to say it is my favorite. Even before I did a little modifying so that it opens bottles, and opens like a wave out of my pocket.

Very slick knife. I think I'm going to have to get a second, a 721 perhaps, to put away as a back-up.

Hi, I'm a new member too. I saw the Leek at a store this weekend. It looked pretty sweet but I bought a Spyderco Calypso Jr. instead. Maybe I'll get a Leek next.

Welcome to the forum. The Leek won the #1 knife award at Blade. That should tell you what others think of the knife.
On the BM, I have no experience, the only BM's I own are Bali's.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I like both of the knives very much, it is hard for me to pick which I like more, but they are different knives for different purposes so I feel that each has its own niche. I too have a Chive, an excellent church knife IMO, and a small Chinese Vapor that I got for under $20. I took the Vapor apart and polished the blade and the handles so it would open smoother along with bending the lock a little more to the center so it engaged the blade more. I agree about the 720 it was not as smooth as some of the other models such as the 941 but I prefered the knife design of the 720 more. I wold like to hear what you think of the new Benchmade 921 double blade with the axis lock. This same knife shop has a pre-production model for about $190, it seems a little high but the lady said they would come down off the price since I have already bought two knives there and they are trying to build a customer base

Ghost045,
Welcome aboard.
Not familiar with the Leek, however, I do have the G-10 version of the 720...(721). Has not seen much use but overall I'm happy with it. The axis lock rules, it has a great and useful blade design and the handle really fills up my hand. Great knife.
Got to handle an early model 921 this weekend. Nice fit and finish. I found the handle almost slippery and the slip joint blade seemed really small. Not really a hard use knife but I don't think is was designed to be. If the handle finish was more like the 940 series it would help.

Hmmmm... hate to hear that about the 921. I was really looking forward to getting my hands on one. But maybe I'll wait until they put S30V in another model (which is the primary reason I wanted the 921). While a second blade is good, I normally have at least two on me -- one of them a Victorinox Executive -- so it is not a factor.

Well I am glad I am not the only one to think that the 921 has an almost slippery feel to it. You have confirmed what I was thinking, I think now I will pass on this one maybe until they put out the carbon fiber handled 941 that I read about here.

Don't know much about the 720, but I've handled a Leek. They were released just about a week ago, and not too many folks have them yet. I would definitely recommend one, though. I handled one at a show, and fell in love. Great size and blade shape for every day carry. I'm waiting for the Rainbow Leek, with the awesome BC1 coating. It will retail for less than $100, so probably right around $75-80 on market; well worth it, in my opinion.

Welcome to the Forums!

I don't have the Leek, but I have both the 720 and 722. You have made an excellent choice. The 720 is very useful for a wide range of knife needs. Best of luck with it.:)

Hey there, Ghostman! So tell us, your new leek, how do you like it? What are your impressions? Specifically, does it have a "flipper" (a lever-like thing that you press or pull to open the blade)? Is it engineered nicely? How does it feel in the hand? How about the lock, I know it's a frame lock, how solid does it feel? How strong does the knife feel overall? Thanks for any info. you can give us on this new release...

Mal, this knife is great. Yes it does have the flipper and the lock engages all the way unlike some of the other frame locks I have. The feel is great it is very solid and satisfying the perfect size for my hand, although it is a little flatter than I like, it is wickedly sharp and has a needle point. This knife is everything I love about the Chive only in what I call the perfect size. I am curious about getting a Scallion now but have not seen one in the regular finish like the Chive and Leek also I am not sure if it is frame lock like the Chive and Leek either. Hope that gives you the info you wanted, maybe somebody can help answer my questions now.

So is the leek just a pretty chive or bigger? If Scalion size how could it be frame lock when Scalions liner lock? (Not that I have anything against liners).

JoeSchmoe2002, I am sorry, I now see that I did not clarify very well. The Leek is nearly identical to the Chive except for the fact that it is nearly 7" open with a blade length of about 3" and closed length of 4". It is about the size of the small Kershaw Vapor. I am suprised that the Scallion is a liner lock but that confirms my theory that since it has scales it must be a liner lock. Thanks for the info.

I got a 722 last month and I love mine. Satin plainedge maintains its looks a lot longer than any BT would. Someday when I get off my ass, I'll contour the scales and polish the blade and hardware.

All you knifenuts out there better get one. Cool as hell and sharp!Kershaw has done it again.:)
