Heyla, everyone. I've been avidly reading the backlog of postings since I found this site about a week ago, with an eye on the uses of a knife for self defense and opinions on the sort of blades one might wish to carry toward that end. Lots of good stuff here.

Today, I purchased my first real knife (ie: not a "swiss army knife" ). I almost went with a Spyderco Endura (which seems to be a favorite with you all), but the store I found only had serrated edge models and my personal preference is for a plain edge or combo edge blade. Instead, I purchased a CRKT M16-13, with a combo edge. It "spoke" to me louder than any of the other blade they had

Like I said, this is my first real knife, so I'd be ever so grateful for care-and-feeding tips for it. Lubrication, sharpening, that sort of thing. The edge is a lot different from the teeny-tiny swiss-army knockoff I've had for years, that's for sure.

Welcome aboard, I use Breakfree on my knives. Tuff cloth and Tuff lube are also excellent.

chaoskitten,

Welcome and may this be the first of many knives.

I would recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 as an excellent investment for sharpening what I sincerely hope will be a growing number of quality knives.

Chaoskitten,

You poor child! I don't think you quite understand what you have done and what you are facing. You have begun to follow a path that leads to addiction! Before long you will be thinking about knives and Bladeforums all the time! Your knife will become your constant companion. You will always wonder whats happening on the forums. Don't even ask what will happen if you should be unable to visit the forums for a couple of days!!!

Congrats on the new knife, such a quality piece should need little care other than to be kept sharp, used often, cleaned and dried regularly. Good Luck!

Welcome to one of the most expensive (though definitely one of the most enthralling) addictions! Here's a tip, if you ever get into a monetary situation where you have enough $$$ to only eat or to only buy a knife, buy the knife! You can always head into the woods and kill yourself some dinner with a new knife

Chaoskitten,
You have the bug! I have seen it happen plenty of times before...... You start off with a nice factory knife, then maybe another and......Then you start looking at customs.....

Oh sorry, I use Marvel Mystery Oil to break in a knife then switch to Breakfree.
Welcome to the Forum,

Thanks for all the kind wishes, everyone.

Travis, don't worry; I know ALL about message forum addiction and how nuts I'll get if I miss a day's worth of messages. I'm on far too many boards as it is

I think the moths in my wallet will help keep the blade addiction under control. I hope.

Felix, glad you like the name. I use it on all the message boards I'm on. Haven't found anyone else using it yet.

Welcome. You are going to love your CRKT. They make some great stuff. I've been a member here for a couple of months and the best piece of advice I can give you is..."Ask questions here first, buy second and check out the internet dealers. You might be surprised at the savings over local retailers".

It's all true. I'm new to this as well, having just gotten a Matriarch and waiting for a Rookie, but I'm already getting hooked. I find myself daydreaming about Damascus steel. Is there any hope for me?

No.

You can run but you can't hide from the knife bug

Gudday kit. You'll have good luck sharpening if you don't worry about what angle to use...
just keep it constant. In other words each stroke should be the same angle. Think of what one side of the blade edge would look like magnified. If each sharpening stroke is made at the same angle, the single, magnified blade edge would be flat. If each stroke angle varied a bit the blade edge would be a little rounded.
