I am a novice collector on a small scale, hoping to educate myself with the help of a forum. I currently have a Randall 7" fillet knife, a ZT 0770, some Kershaw knives, some Schrade USA knives, and some Bear & Son knives. I recently purchased a Buck 112 on ebay that was described as embossed wood with nickel silver and lapis spacers on the handle. Bucks mark on knife indicates Made in 1993 with no information on when or by who the customizing was done by. The scales look like no wood I have seen before. Looks more like pictures I have seen of Mammoth Bark Scales. I am hoping some member with knowledge about materials can help me. I have some highly detailed photos, the forum will not allow me to post them. Thank You for any help with this. Ed

If you use a photo hosting site like imgur or photobucket it's fairly simple to post pictures. There are instructions in the stickies to help.

Looking forward to seeing your Buck. :)

If that's the pic, it looks like a rough sort of wood that has had a bit of 'shellac' applied or something similar. I have a traditional knife that was made with reclaimed American Chestnut wood from an old barn that looks very similar. I guess they coat the wood (or soak it, or whatever) and then polish the surface to a shine. The material used may be showing a bit of age from ultra-violet exposure, which may explain the mottled or worn look to the wood. This is just my opinion based on a low res pic, though.

Looks like mammoth to me. Guess you'll find out when it arrives.

It has arrived, yhose are my photos, the photos in ebay were too small to see well. I just have not seen Mammoth in person before and wanted to make sure. Ed

Does not look like "embossed wood" to me, you may have scored and got mammoth. Hard to tell for sure

Thank you for the reply. I could not identify it as any kind of wood and my search came colsest to Mammoth, though there is much variance in tose too.
