Hi folks, first post here. I've been lurking for a little while trying to find my 1st knife for EDC. Yes that might sound funny to you pros but I said 1st knife!!! I need to take this slow as I have a very addictive personality 😳! If I read the forum too much like I did with guns this past year ill end up with 30 of them also! Anyway I think I've picked the Spyderco Sage 1 for my first. Is that a good choice? Also with a good knife should come a good sharpener. I don't know the first thing about sharpeners and will start reading the forum but any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't mind spending good money on the sharpener.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to BF, there's a wealth of information and experience here. The Sage is a great first knife, you'll love it. Since you're starting off with a Spyderco, get the Sharpmaker from Spyderco also. It comes with a instructional video and is easy to use. Good luck on trying to resist more Spyderco's once you have the Sage in hand :)

Ajack60,
Thanks for the reply! What should I be spending on the Sage 1 and sharpmaker? I'm going to buy on amazon but the prices fluctuate often! Currently the sage is $102 and the sharpmaker is $47. Is that pretty much the norm? If so I'll pull the trigger on both tonight.

I second the recommendation for the Sharpmaker and just about any Spyderco knife that catches your eye. Knifeworks has a pretty decent sale going on right now on Spyders (no affiliation).

I've got a Lansky, a Sharpmaker and a recently purchased Work Sharp Ken Onion. The WSKO is my favorite, but nothing beats the Sharpmaker for ease of use. You can quickly screw up a knife on the Work Sharp if you aren't careful. They all take practice, but the Sharpmaker works very well and is fun to use. I'd recommend you consider the Ultra Fine stones for it at some point down the road.

The training video for the Sharpmaker is on the Spyderco website. It's a little hokie, but informative.

Sounds like reasonable prices. Word of warning though, there are a lot of fakes floating around. They look so close to the real thing, folks are having a hard time knowing the difference. You may want to consider buying from a authorized dealer or one from here on the forum. There are several reputable dealers like Knives Ship Free, BladeHQ, KnifeWorks to name a few. Go look at the vendors here first. Sometimes the cheapest may not be the best.

A fake is definitely a concern of mine. I've purchased 100's of things in amazon and the safe is sold directly though amazon so figured it was safe. Has anyone ever purchased a fake buying through amazon? I'll definitely steer clear of eBay.

I'm assuming it's safe to buy the sharpmaker from amazon correct?

I would keep your eyes on the exchange here on bladefourms. You never know what is going to pop up. I would stay away from amazon for knives. Stick to the reputable dealers. I like knifeworks and bladehq.

I bought my sharpmaker and one UF stone from Amazon (Didn't realize at the time the UF stones were sold as singles). I bought the other UF stone from EBay because the shipping was free.

You should be fine - just be careful. For knives, I'd rather spend a few more bucks and know I've got a dealer standing behind me but everyone is different when it comes to buying online.

There were recently some fake Buck knives being sold on Amazon through their sellers, so it's better to be safe than buy a crappy Made In China replica. Like others have mentioned, check out the vendors here and also from the exchange.

Ok, I'll buy from a reputable online retailer. The good thing about amazon is they take all returns at there expense so it doesn't cost a dime for the buyer if need be. Anyone know any good sales or coupon codes for online retailers going on now or over the 4th of July weekend?

Welcome. If what you are asking for comes from a a retailer who is not a BladeForums Paid Dealer Member, then what you are asking for is called a "Deal Spot," and is, I believe, against the rules.

Marcinek,
I apologize for any misunderstanding I may have caused you. When I said reputable company I meant the companies other members have been pushing me to use of which I believe are all paid sponsors of BF.
I have read all of the forum rules and I'm well aware of them.
If you have any further questions and or debates please use the pm function. This will keep my thread on track.
Thanks

Welcome sir. I also use Amazon and have had zero issues. If you get something from them you are not satisfied with simply return it. Just my two cents.

I have used Amazon for years without any problem. That said, supporting the forum by purchasing from one of it's member dealers, is both safe and a good thing.

P.S. - Welcome to Blade Forums.

Thanks for the amazon reviews! That's what I was looking for. I've never had troubles dealing with amazon. The only thing that worries me is not being able to spot a fake! The fakes seem to be getting better and better looking and I'm no spyderco expert.

Ordered the spyderco sharpmaker this am from amazon! Still gotta order the Sage 1.

Pics please when the Sage comes in. While it's still pristine! Lol I always consider my knives as pristine virgins until I fondle them, well after that, no longer pristine! 😱

wtlj, there are plenty of fakes that originate from Amazon. Especially spyderco's. I would only buy through them if the seller is a reputable dealer, it's a lot safer to spend another 10$ or whatever and just buy from BladeHQ or Knives Ship Free or Knifeworks or others that sponsor the site. As to sharpeners, I will be the one to recommend the Ken Onion Work Sharp right off the bat. It is basically a small variable speed belt sander. Virtually all knives have most or all of their final edges put on with a belt sander. It is more difficult to foul up an edge than some would have you believe, if you're just careful and follow the directions and look around for the videos on it, you will do fine. The sage happens to be one of my favorite spyderco's and I think it's a great place to start.
