There always seems to be a few new members here on BladeForums who ask the same set of questions about once a week. I thought it'd be nice to make a collaboration of general knife knowledge for them to read and review before asking a question.

For example:

1. Don't ask a question about Cold Steel unless it is well-thought-out and has a very distinct point and educated point of view and purpose behind it! I don't think you could find a more controversial knife company in the business.

2. Don't inquire about Dark Ops knives, either, for that matter. They're as controversial as Lynn Thompson's Cold Steel and nothing good ever comes out of those related posts besides moderately funny "Dork Ops" jokes and scathing comments about their ads.

3. Don't ask a question about what new "super-cool, ultra-model self-defense combat knife" to get. Every reply will include something about a) get training; b) get a gun; or c) it's pointless and generally will be illegal or risky in your locale.

4. Yes, Spydercos are good.

5. Yes, Kershaws are good.

6. Yes, Benchmades are good.

7. Sebenzas and Busses are worth the cost, whether you think so or not. When you catch the "knife fever," you'll understand. ;)

8. Get a Buck 110. It's not the most modern folder, but it's a great deal and still made here within our borders. I have mine from 1974 and it still looks (and performs) like brand new.

These are just a few points I wanted to add...more thoughts to come (lost my train of thought...:D)!

God bless.

KATN,

Wade

Assume blades labelled 440 are 440A.

There are three grades of 440. They are 440A, 440B, 440C. They do not perform the same.

Do not assume all knives made in China are crap.

Do not assume cheap knives made in China that say 440C really have blades made from 440C.

There is no such thing as a factory angle its just some guy standing in front of a power belt sharpener. I understand that everyone was or is a knife noob at some point but you will never learn if you don't do your homework.

.....and your not going to learn the art of hand sharpening in a week.

And nobody gives a rats a$$ what's in your pocket today. Beem there, done that! 54 times.

sticky?

granted, my first post was "what knife to buy" but if it was stickied i wouldnt have!

Um what bought 440v and 440xh?

Chinese knives marked 440c are actually 9cr18mov stainless which is not a bad steel.

Don't forget all the "vs" threads. Usually the 1st post "Is "brand X" any good?", the 2nd post is a "vs" thread of brand X vs brand Y knife.

The current name for 440V is S60V. I would love to try a knife in Carpenter 440XH. Never seen one. Do you know of one?

9Cr18MoV is pretty good stuff, but the edge retention is still less than that of actual 440C.

No more threads about "If you could have just one knife.." or "If you could only keep one of your knives". Those threads have been done about a half million times and 80% of the responses don't give "just one" knife.
