New Micarta Scales on my BK2

In accordance with my vow to succumb to peer pressure on BF whenever possible, I just ordered a BK2 with micarta scales from NG.

They had 4 in stock and I ordered one and you ordered one. I wonder if the other person that bought them is a BF member too!!?!?!?!?:D

Well, they are out of stock now on the BK2, but I suspect that Ka-bar will send them a few more.

RMC: do the micarta scales interfere with the plastic sheath? A pic in the sheath would be nice if you could swing it. :)

They fit just like the stock scales.

Just put the new tan micarta scales on my older Camillus Companion and BK9.They look and feel great! In my Companion sheath the knife fits too loose with the new scales.I'm going to get a leather sheath made for it,no big deal.

Whats the old sheath looks like? Is it the same a the new one?

It looks almost identical to the new sheaths.I ended up wrapping electrical tape several times around the top of the sheath, where there is kind of a slit when you insert the knife. That tightened it up and solved the problem. It might not look beautiful, but hey,it worked.

Great looking tools :)

pity the postage for us Internationals is a killer :( i think i will order dirct from Kabar for the slabs, will see what happens.

Got my BK2 today. Decided to stick the micarta on a BK9, as I like the look and feel of the stock BK2.

The sheath works fine, but its not my favorite setup, so I ordered a kydex belt sheath from Eric at ON/SCENE TACTICAL. I have another of his sheaths for a Fallkniven and its good stuff. Not spendy either.

Pics of that sheath would be great.

Hmmmm

I got my handles today... they look decent, although beige isn't my favourite colour.
I had to whittle down a few edges and imperfections, but that was no problem.
They feel a lot more solid than the hollow grivory ones.

The actual problem with them is that they smell.
Yes, i said smell.
They emit a foul industrial stench that makes me nauseous and afraid of being poisoned.
What the hell?
I'm going to google micarta for a while to find out what's in this vile concoction.

well, if you were to make homemade micarta, you'd soak layers of cloth in epoxy, and slime them all together in your pattern of choice, and compress them, and wait and wait wait wait...

such things outgas. probably you have a very fresh one. the outgassing will be sped up with maximum surface area - ie: take them off, hang them by a string somewhere with fresh area for a few days/weeks, though, given the density, they're likely to do so for a while.

"solvents" and plasticizers and stuff. yum.

just sweat on em a little. It'll go away. I noticed a faint scent coming off my RC4 handles as well, but it went away pretty quick.

I just smelled my grips and the now smell like the outdoors.

I used my BK2 for about 7 hours straight at my friends deer camp 10 days ago. I guess it was enough to get the smell out.

Don't be afraid of the micarta, it's not gonna hurt you. Using your knife near your face on the other hand... :D

Those micarta slabs came on my 77(factory blem, I'm not a rich guy!), and they feel great. I like the fact that they aren't buffed smooth. Paul(toooj) told me they were made right here in my home town by D.B. Webb. Kabar/Cutco is only an hour down the road, I gotta get down there sometime.

Those handles look great! If you have a drill press, scroll saw, and a dremel, you can do your own.
