Here is the other kit that I had put together along with the otter box 2000 survival kit. This is an otter box 1000, the smallest one they make. The external size of the box is 4.8 x 3.7 x 1.7, and the internal size is 3.7 x 2.4 x 1.0. The box is small enough to easily fit into most any pocket to carry around with you just about anywhere you go and it's waterproof down to 100 feet. I really like the clear cases since you san see what's inside them. This isn't the most complete kit in the world, but due to the boxes size you can only fit so much inside. Well, here are the pics and a list of it's contents:

Cool little kit, I need to get a couple of these otter boxes.

I really do like the REI matches.

What is the handcuff key for? Where do you buy your snare wire? I cannot for the life of me remember where I got mine and need MORE.

military surplus stores carry it.

I'm sure that isn't where I picked up the last snare wire, but I'll check there if can find one open in this town. We had a few surplus stores in past years, but I recently cannot find a single one still open. Bummer.

Opening handcuffs. :D

My original question was over simplified and predicated on the premise that the potential value of handcuff keys was minimal for the purpose for which it was intended, at least in the scenarios I can envision for a survival kit. Thus, I theorized either the use was something a-typical or the answer was. At any rate, you're spot on Don :p

Yes, yes, yes (stroking goatee) and, not only that, I must kindly remind you of Beavis Theory, not totally dissimilar from Cajun Chaos Theory - "The angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of the beat."

Now you've done it. Please, someone rescue me from the depths of this cavern, that is Don Rhetoric.

Thats a very cool kit! I need to put one like that together...

Thanks for sharing :D

How can someone have an avatar like that and just be so bereft of humor?

Hey, now that's hitting below the belt! I watched avatar (Pocahontas #2) and loved it! I was joking, and you slapped me in the huevos with your bushcraft blade! It wasn't meant for manscaping!

I would never slap your eggs with my Col. Angus Blade. :D

HEY! What's that key for!!??!!

The key is for an E/E, SHTF situation. A small part of my bug out bag is set up also for unrest in large urban areas in a SHTF situation. If this happens most likely there will be roving groups of idiots trying to take over the city. In case you were to get locked up by some of these people, the key is there to help get you out of that situation of being locked up. Also the knowledge of how to defeat zipties if they are used instead of handcuffs as a restraint. They are just another level of protection in case I was ever to run into a SHTF situation.

If you're handcuffed, how are you going to get to the key? And wouldn't they have searched you and your things by that point? Or do you have somewhere on your person you can hide it (obvious spots like pockets would probably be searched by that point, too).

edit: I'm not trying to break balls--having a handcuff key in BOB/SHTF bags is something I've never understood.

You'd have to get it out and stash it ahead of time if you think you might end up in that sort of situation. That's the only key I have that's metal, all my other's are plastic, so they can't be detected. I have a pocket, with a zipper, that I had sewn in on the back side of my belt that's large enough to hold a key a some other items for stashing, so that's where I'd keep it more than likely. I know the key isn't the answer to all the issues but I'd rather have one on me, than not.
