New model GEC Dogleg Trapper

these are supposed to be slim. i like the stout patterns they have produced but admit the executive whittler is a delicate beauty. i'm glad i snapped up 2 of the exe. whitts in genuine stag.for a using knife i really dig the single blade mdl.23 trapper & the regular muskrat. since i carry these on the ranch a larger knife is no problem. in the city i go back to the endura since its light & i can access with one hand.the gec barlows are too small for my stiff hands but i bought several for my collection. anyway you look at it, the knives are exceptional quality & are nice to show your friends.

That's certainly something to consider. I'd like to see one in Yellow Banana Smooth Bone without the guitar but the guitar in the Yellow handles wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Eh . Not exactly breaking new ground here, are they? At least as far as bringing interesting old patterns back into production is concerned. The slim trapper is sooo ubiquitous.

I was hoping for something a bit more unique. There are so many great (and relatively obscure) patterns that seldom see the light of day anymore; the Surveyor, Eureka, Crown, Farmer's, Rodger's and Wharncliffe Jacks; the various Norfolk patterns, and how about a bird's eye shadow utility or Sportsman's pattern with premium scales, or maybe even a Horseman or Champagne pattern? C'mon GEC - think outside the box a little.

I want a GEC Orange Blossom! :p

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first GEC, an executive whittler in the gold black acrylic. IMO it's the prettiest new traditional on the market.

Best regards

Robin

That looks like every other trapper out there. I don't really see the dogleg pedigree.

I like it. I think when you get it in your hand it is going to be a lot like a Schrade 285UH which is the perfect size trapper to me.

Try finding a 3 7/8" trapper in carbon steel and made with quality materials. There just aren't any around. I'll take one in stag!

Just 3/8" short of 3 7/8" at 3 1/2" the CV Case Mini-Trapper is a handy knife of good quality.

I would've prefered something more like the CASE/Bose Dog-Leg or Queen Cutlery version, having a modified pen blade for instance. Can't see myself getting the GEC version even if I am fan of many of their knives, it seems dull .

I have to admit I was highly anticipating this #48 Dogleg. I was holding off on purchasing a Case / Bose Dogleg Jack until I saw photos of the new GEC. While I don't dislike the GEC #48, it doesn't really do much for me, so I went with the Case / Bose (at 4-5 times the price ).

True, and I have half a dozen of them. I like the older ones from the 70's, but they are more of a jack knife with a trapper handle.

However, this knife looks more like a slightly scaled down 1950's Case trapper than a modern Case 48 pattern. The only more modern knife I can think of that was made that way was the 285UH Uncle Henry. Eye Brand used to offer a 3 7/8 size trapper but I haven't seen one in a long time.

I like old case knives from the days when they weren't so blocky and heavy. Their trapper used to be a thing of beauty, and since the 1980's it's a chunk. Still a great working knife, but not the same lines as they once had.

The knife in my pocket is a 1970 made case 6347 stockman. If you were to hold it side by side with a 6347 from the 1990's my old one is just plain sexier. Like holding a Colt Woodsman in one hand and a Glock in the other.

Try a toothpick. Not my favorite design, but in a GEC they are quite nice.
Truth! I got one recently, and it's been in my pocket every day since. It's pretty slim, and not overly huge like the big-a$$ Queen toothpicks. It's 4" alright, but carries like three and a half.

I like this one a little better. They might grow on me...

This trapper is sweeeet. I admit, it's not "unique," as some earlier posters have noted. But I think there's no shortage of unique knives from GEC. Really unique. Some might say, too unique.* I guess I'm just a traditionalist.

*Sorry, guys, I couldn't help it. I'll keep my trap shut now. :foot:

I am glad they changed the name from Dogleg to Traditional. This is much more pocketable (is that a word) than the other trapper patterns of theirs. I like the little oddballs they come up with and wish they would do more of those; but I think we are not dealing with Frank Buster here. We are dealing with traditionalists.

That St Patty's Day acrylic is something else. Reminds me of those 1950s formica tables. I can't say I love it at first sight, but something about it is tempting. Might be nice to have that weird looking acrylic floating around in my pocket.
