New models, blanks ground, first Nessmuks....New folder progress 9/16

More folders already? :D

Can't wait until the first one you have at peters' is back... I wanna see that baby finished!

Awesome as always jonny

I know, first one isn't even done yet and I'm already at the drawing board! What can I say? I got a wild hair the other night and started having ideas. Had to put it on paper. Even just with the paper models I think I've made some good improvements over my first folder design. I'm still excited to get the first blade back from Peters though and finish it.

Thanks Jonathan!

I like the big 'muk.
So many at once!

You need an oven.

I like the knives as usual bro. The Nessies look more Bowie to me, but still great looking blanks.

Thanks Andy! I'm holding off on the oven for just a little while so I can study the science of heat treating stainless, way too much info out there for me to just assume that I can throw a blade in the kiln and have it come out just right. I'm going to let Peters take care of me for now, but in the meantime I do have a mill on order for building folders;)

Looking great, Jon!

What mill are you getting? I assume it's a mini, but I am curious. Also, I checked out your facebook page and I want to see that folder finished - I'm starting to think you have a knack for this. :D

MacAttack!

Hey Erik,
I finally pulled the trigger on a Grizzly/Weiss 704/BF20 mill. It's not a mini but it's no Bridgeport either. The worst part is that I saved up the cash, and made the decision, then when I finally ordered it, they told me it was back ordered until Dec. 15th!!

I'm contemplating using the backorder time to save up more cash and upgrade a bit, but after lots of research it looks like the 704 will be a great machine for what I want to do.

Well, made some more progress on the new folder design. Main bevel is done, and lock/pivot area is pretty well dialed in. Still need to grind some off the top edge to streamline it a bit I think. Also still waiting on the new carbide band saw blade for cutting ti slabs. I'll be doing protos of this folder in both framelock and linerlock varieties.

Also, the last batch in CPM-154 and 154CM showed up today from Peters, so it's about to get crazy around here again!

That looks SICK. Get that one assembled and finished ASAP so we can bother you to make more and buy them :D

Great looking knife, Jon. BTW, I googled your mill and can't find it. Can you post or shoot me a link?

Wow, that flipper looks killer Jonny, keep the pics coming. I hope to eventually do some flippers, and need all the pointers I can get!

Jon, that mill is going to rock for your folders and fixed blades. Holla! (as my friends say, hehe)

Jon.. the mill looks awesome. Grizzly/Enco and Harbor freight share the same Chinese manufacturer. Look into the other companies for there version of the Grizzly G0704. Or you can upgrade to the G0705,for a bit over $200 more you get double the power. Here is the link http://www.grizzly.com/products/G0705

Jonny, although you can do certain things with a mill that you can't do with a drill press you don't need one to make folders. I'd get the oven for about 700 bucks and heat treating stainless is easy. Just a thought my friend.

Thanks Ray. I've already built my first folder prototype without a mill, so I know it can be done, but I think it will add a level of ease to many operations that I want to do on a regular basis, so I feel it's a good investment. I have a couple of drill presses, but for something like milling out the lockbar relief on a ti framelock I don't want to be putting that kind of lateral pressure on them. In the long run I think having a machine built for what you want to do is important.

The oven is still on my list, but as soon as I started really asking guys about stainless heat treat and the discussion went the way of dry ice, LN2, strict recipes, etc. I just realized that heat treating was something I did not want to take lightly. I'm going to spend some time educating myself before I just fire up an oven and throw in some steel. Once I'm confident that I've researched it enough I'll be heat treating as well.

Yeah the liquid nitrogen part is important for stainless. Other than that it's pretty easy. Good luck man. Your work looks great.

In addition to finishing up fixed blade orders I am getting more bits of work done on my 2nd flipper design in S35VN, which is going to be a Ti framelock. Got handle slabs and liner rough shaped anf holes are drilled. Positioning is looking pretty good so far with good clearances. I have to get the holes in the Ti slab tapped so I can screw it all together and get the profile all finished up.

Here are some pics of what happened today. I also got started on my plexi glass template for this one because I'm thinking there might be more of these in the future.

Thanks for looking!
