Alright where to begin...so I work in a sewing and vacuum store, so I have access to tons of 12 amp vacuum cleaner motors(new or used) and I get them new from Riccar and Miele at wholesale. Sewing machine motors are small and out ouf the question, but vacuum motors can pull a little bit of power seeing as 12 amp is the most you can get in a vacuum motor. My question, will the strongest vacuum motor work for a new grinder? polar bear forge or nwg will be my choice. I am not opposed to rebuilding a motor myself or buying a new motor im just cheap , I also have a 1/3 hp motor for a Packard grinder but I don't think I can rig or rebuild that to put out more hp.

Thanks for the help in advance guys, im not great with motor math so I always appreciate help from people who are.

On a side note from one knife maker to another Miele and Riccar are great vacuum cleaner, check em out.

I would want at least 1hp if I was motor shopping and would prefer 2hp or more.

I have a Miele myself but I cant imagine any motor worthy of a knife grinder would fit in the thing. Im not sure what power/rpm it puts out.

Even if it was enough in the power department you would still have issues with mounting the motor on the grinder, and getting a pulley or drive wheel mounted. Then the motor is probably open framed so that would definitely be a no-go on a grinder. You really want a TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor

Im all for sourcing things out but there is an abundance of industrial quality (new an used) motors that would mount right up to a GIB for example,

A vacuum motor, well would probably suck...... sorry couldn't resist ....:D

Shop vac, router, vacuum cleaner, and other similar motors won't work.
As the last poster said, you want a TEFC 1.5-2HP motor for a production grinder ( KMG, Bader, TW90, etc.), and a 1Hp to 1.5Hp motor on a starter grinder ( NWG, EERF, etc.).

Or even 3 hp since sometimes they can be found cheap. Maybe since there is less demand.

Alright thanks guys I appreciate it... I went to work today and ran some tests and found out 12 amps on a vacuum motor is only about 1/3 hp at max. maybe I should have done that before I posted this. Anyway thanks again guys.

Check out ebay if you are looking for a motor. I got a baldor 1.5hp TEFC motor brand new in the box for 200$ shipped to my door. And that's a steal of a deal. Plus you can find them used for cheaper than that. Good luck finding a motor!!

Yup, like Wesley says, ebay is a good place to look. I picked up a couple of 1HP TEFC Reversible Leesons brand new for $185 each shipping included. They might be on the low end in power for a belt grinder but I'm using them for disc sanders so that should be plenty. But you get the idea. You can find them with higher HP without too much trouble.
