New Mule angle-Question for Mr. Glesser

I just received my new S110V Mule. I haven't precisely measured the edge angle, but going by "calibrated eyeball" it appears to be in excess of 25 degrees per side.

Is there some characteristic of this steel that requires such a steep angle?

I normally rebevel most of my knives to 15 degrees per side or less right out of the box. However I do not remember ever having a blade with an angle this steep. I will await additional information before rebevelling.

Thank you,
Ben

My K390 Mules had nice wide, approx. 17 degree bevels. The MT 18 feels qiute sharp to the touch, but the bevel is so narrow that my reading glasses are needed to see it.

I doubt there's a special reason. My Domino is sharpened very steeply.

These last two steels are quite a challenge to work with and take more time to produce. Most of all costly on the equipment. At those prices I am very content with them, most all custom makers don't even touch them. I'm glad they chose to keep the cost down in this case... Sampling at $90 and $70 could have been a lot more for something knife nuts enjoy to do at home.

I doubt there was any other reason. I would imagine that people interested in Mules are mostly steel buffs who will sharpen it to their liking anyway.

Good point. I doubt that any among us preserve the factory edge for very long. I'd take one blunt if it saved Spyderco some time.

Also, these were not produced in Golden, so it may be that the default sharpening practice was different in the factory where these were made.

Thank you, gentlemen.

I think I will go ahead and take it down to 15 DPS. We'll see what happens!:p

Hi Ben,

We normally use 30 degree total or 15 DPS. New maker for Mule Team wasn't aware of our tight requirement. Sorry. Future Mule Team pieces will use 15 DPS.

Thank you, Mr. Glesser. This was not meant to be a complaint, just a question since I'm not experienced with the steel!

I will break out my ATOMA 140 and go to work on it!

With the extremely high chromium content, this blade should easily take a mirror polish.:):)

Let us know how you make out with this please? :)

While I haven't taken out the micrometer yet, the S110v seems much thinner behind the edge than all of my other mules. Both of mine are very sharp with almost a "zero" edge with a tiny tiny bevel. No complaints as I am gonna take them down to 15 degrees on the wicked edge.

I have the same experience. It does appear thinner. I only opened one out of its box so far and after a stropping its making ribbons out of phonebook paper so it came sharp with that narrow bevel. Dont know the angle but will EP it to about 28 and Microbevel it with the SM at 30.

I'm really disappointed to have missed this. I think that these should be a 1 piece maximum order because vultures just buy them and resell them once they are sold out. It's like scalping tickets; nobody but the greedy $@&$ wins. Massive frowns.

I was thinking that the small bevel was due to a thinner edge. If you look at customs especially by Phil Wilson, his edges look like this. In reality, there is no way to tell what is going on from pictures alone. It could be a nice 15 degrees per side with a nice thin bevel, which would be fantastic for cutting performance. I got excited the first picture I saw of it. I wish I had one of those angle finders Spyderco made and disco'd back in the day.

Dude we're fortunate enough that Spyderco put a two blade maximum. They didn't have to make it anything. A lot of folks are collectors but would also like to use the blade. You're right in that some will buy them and flip them, but a lot of folks just want to have one to use and one to keep safe.

I ordered my ONE at 11:01 (central) when they went on sale, if you want to get in on the next one I'd suggest you keep your eyes peeled for any information and be there when they go on sale. We had about a week and a half worth of notice to get ready, it's all about timing.
