Carbides in a steel does not make it a ceramic. It's still a steel. All steels have carbides. 2.1% carbon is for iron-carbon phase diagrams. Additions of other alloys changes it, as well as powder metallurgy.

Thought it might be the goofy 'puter at work but not on my great home unit either.

Sorry if Im dumb, but who cares if its carbides or ceramics or whatnot. It work, and works well. Isnt that what tools are about?

Steel is not just iron + carbon, it is iron + carbon up to a certain concentration. Wrought iron, steel, maraging, cast iron, they can all be iron with a certain amount of carbon. Anyone who is a fan of H-1, INFI, etc should not be quibbling about ceramics present in their blades.

I agree, new processes have altered where the boundaries lie, but not all 'steel' is steel.

I can go back and read through my Heat Treater's Guide, Atlas of Isothermal Transformation & Cooling Transformation Diagrams, Tool Steel Simplified, Metallurgy of Steel for Bladesmith's & Others who Heat Treat & Forge Steel, Functions of the Alloying Elements in Steel, Metallurgy of Iron & Steel, Physical Metallurgy of Steel, or some of the pdfs I have on my computer if wikipedia is insufficient.
