New Native Sprint CPM154/S90V

Saber grind.

Yea and it looks like they laminated along the grind line instead of about 1/4" above the cutting edge. Of course it's a stock photo and the production could be different, wish they did solid CF for $215 though.

Peel ply cf is solid carbon fiber.
The final layer has a textured sheet applied then after curing that ply is peeled off to reveal the desired grippy surface.
Don't care for that grippy G-10 look? Sand it off and polish, looks great.

Question... Does this model have metal liners? I was gonna get the fluted cf native 5 with s90v but if this doesn't have liners like that one, I may choose to get this version.

Peel ply is very good. It's not g10 at all. It adds extra grip and as mentioned above can be sanded flat if desired.

Whats better the Saber grind or the standard native 5 grind? I only have a big chopper with a Saber grind no small edc knives. Pros and cons?

Photo looks like it has liners. Apart from not having the swedge, it does have more of the look of the older style native. Looks really good. I'm guessing the 90V is the cutting edge?

Yes, S90V clad with CPM154.
There's a Manix already released with the same blade if you need to check out reviews.

I like how spyderco is bringing back the laminate blade when so many others have slowly let it go over time. Makes me really excited (and somewhat worried for my wallet) about what 2018 will bring. It will also be interesting to see how other companies respond to it.

OK I was confused, I thought peel ply was when it’s g10 with a thin CF layer just on the outside...what is that called?

Is this knife (this Native) made with scales similar to the ZT CF models?

There are laminated cf scales.
Pretty sure ZT has released a few and maybe the Spyderco Chaparral?
Someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong for sure... ;)

Peel ply cf needs a new name.
So much confusion that Spyderco interjects occasionally to explain the details.
Just give the textured pattern a trademarked name, then add "carbon fiber".
Simple.

Interesting that they went with the saber grind. I wonder what the thinking was in that decision?

Old school?

Really like the peel-ply. I don’t like the ergos of the fluted but do like the LW ergos. Hope this is similar to the LW.

Thank you all for your interest in this knife. I write almost all the copy for Spyderco, so I thought I'd explain our standard terms for carbon fiber materials:

Solid Carbon Fiber - I typically use this term to emphasize when something is made from homogenous carbon fiber. Usually, this applies to scales that are 3-D machined to create a contoured shape (the Proficient fixed blade) or, sometimes, a texture pattern (the upcoming Perrin PPT Sprint). I also try to specify the handle finish, when possible--i.e. polished, matte, etc.
Peel-Ply Carbon Fiber - This term describes solid carbon fiber scales with a peel-ply texture. After they are machined to shape, the top ply is peeled off to reveal the texture, which is molded into the top surface of the carbon fiber during the manufacturing process of the material.
Carbon Fiber/G-10 Laminate - This material consists of a top layer of carbon fiber laminated to a thicker base layer of G-10. Sometimes, the top layer can also be textured; however, I will always emphasize the fact that this material is a laminate and differentiate it from solid, homogenous carbon fiber.

I hope this helps you understand what each material offers and what you're getting.

Stay safe,

Mike

Thanks for the explanation. Does that terminology only apply to Spyderco? I have a ZT 0850 that has CF scales, they are real and I can even see the pattern on the inside of the scales but it is smooth with very little texture.

What are the advantages of the laminated blade? Why is it superior to just making the blade from s90v?

"...the upcoming Perrin PPT Sprint."

Thank you for clarifying the terms that Spyderco uses, but I have to admit, this statement really distracted me...in a very good way!
