Just picked up an old gateway P133 computer from the surplus section of our hospital - $18 includes p133, 32mb RAM, 3.1 GB HD, network card, ATI video card (Mach64), 14" color monitor, mouse, keyboard - all in working condition. Nice little system for browsing the web/email/wordprocessing.

Your business may have such a store as well - worth looking into.

I helped my wife's former employer donate a bunch of their old computer gear to a local school. They were ready to put it all in a dumpster, so were happy to find they could take a tax write-off for the charitable doantion to the school. The funny thing was: the school was happy to take a truck full of 17" Nanao monitors (used to be high end), a couple industrial grade Lexmark laser printers and some IBM industrial inkjet printers, but didn't want anything to do with computers older than a Pentuim II! This was two years ago and I couldn't find anyone who wanted the stack of Pentium 133 Compaq desktop computers that were complete except for hard drives and Windows licenses. I had to put them in a dumpster. It killed me because these were still useful computers for running windows 95, maybe 98 (slowly). For the cost of a small hard drive ($40.00) and a shool district or NPO windows license, these could have been useful, if not state of the art, computers.

My little 133 is running win98se just fine. It'll be a nice little addition to my home network.

The security always gets the short end.... for several years, the only computers our department could afford were cast-offs from the finance department.

We still have one in one of the campus substations with a 2gig hard drive. How old is that?

On the other hand, everything in the institution is hooked up to our super-duper fiber-optic T1 cable/LAN. Fast surfing even with antiquated computers. (of course, I never do that while on duty.)

That's cool.

We used an old 133 for a long time(for the basics) and only upgraged last year when we needed the digital photography capabilities of the new stuff.

The old one was upgraded a bit by a very smart computer dude I know and donated to a family that couldn't afford much. They now have access to the basics(word processing and e-mail) the kids have something for schoolwork.

It's definitely worth the $20 bucks for a backup machine for email/web stuff, etc... I went through PA school w/ a p90 - worked just fine for it's intended purposes.

My wife & I have a 2 other computers that are more than adequate for our everyday needs (p3-550 & p4-2.4g), but this little guy will be nice for email checks & web surfing - has a LAN card already to go :)
