great work ! do you ever do multiple layers of leather for a beafier handle or do you generally prefer just the one layer?

Sweet Bro! Now thats one I would love to have had exploring the Hilsborough River Valley with. That's almost a short sword :D

oh he** ya! that knife screams mountain man!

SAY........could you make me a sheath for my SY SOD that looks like those scales? ;)

Very cool Rick. I could see many of us, LOL besides you to, roaminmg around the timber with that knife. I can hardly wait to see what the sheath will look like.

I have been meaning to ask Rick - how comfortable are those handles? I think you make them like this for the more primitive look and feel - but I have always wondered if you sacrifice usability by not using modern materials. What say ye?

Rick, I really just love your knives bro. Super work there.

I just cut up my first big ones myself. (by big I mean 15" OAL)

Good question..... I do use modern materials when I think they are the only reasonable choice for performance. I first started using leather scales after seeing them on the mountainman-type throwing knives. I put them on one of my throwers and was so impressed that I started putting them on my working knives. Mistwalker, was the first to receive a prototype of the Bushlore. Everyone who has tried the leather scales REALLY likes them... especially in cold weather. They do require a little maintanance... but I feel they have more "spirit"... sorry if that sounds too cheesy.

Sure, there are better performing materials out there... but IMO... the leather scales are 65% function and 35% coolness. To me, state of mind is 90% while in the woods and natural materials transport me back to a simpler time.

Understood Rick... I have (pass around) never used (pass around) leather handles on anything but throwers. (cough) - bushlore - pass around - starting and ending with me.

Thanks Rick, I'm in for the pass around too.:thumbup::thumbup::D:D:D

But seriously, that is a beautiful knife. Are there are downsides to 1080 for kitchen duty?

But seriously again, if you do a pass around, count me in.

Rick,
That is a really beautiful knife.
It will look great working in the woods or carving a turkey at home.

Very nice Rick. The blade shape is reminiscent of Christof's Spanish Dirk, but I think your blade overall is smaller. I like your handles and how is just blends in with the forge finish on the blade. Do you wax impregnate the leather like what some of the sheathmakers do?

I don't think I have seen a knife or anything on your website that I didn't like!

Great work!

Yes, I bond the leather to the tang with a rubberized epoxy that resists gas, oil and acid... rivet it, then dip it in a hot beeswax/lindseed mixture. Took me a while to get it right. I tested the leather scales by letting them soak in a bucket of water for weeks at a time. I'm happy with what I have, now.

Thanks
Rick

Rick,

I've been admiring your work since I found this forum. That is one great looking long knife! The blend of primitive vs functionality you put into your tools seriously kicks ass!

Brandon

PS A pass around would be sweet!
