just got a new carbon steel opinel 8 and it came with a very rough edge. A few minutes on the sharpmaker and it's shaving sharp. I though Opinels came laser sharp from the factory? Not a big deal just unexpected.

Maybe the actual sharpening of the edge,on that particular knife, was overlooked, got past thier qc Those knives get sharp easy enough, though

As good as the steel is (carbone) and for how cheap they are, I think we're lucky they sharpen any of them!

I can't believe i started a thread about a new knife and i forgot to post a pic.

I have 3 and none of them came razor sharp. Decent, but not to my standard anyway. That said, none of them were rough, just not sharp enough for my taste. And like has been said, they sharpen up so easy, I really enjoy sharpening my Opinels. The carbon in particular, with a medium grit paper(I convex on a mouse pad and sand paper set up) you can watch the burr build up in a couple passes. They are just a joy to sharpen if you enjoy that type of thing.

So if they come a little less than perfect, I'm ok with it. Never had one come with a real rough edge but if it cleans up well and performs to expectations, I wouldn't have a problem with it personally.

If you expect a perfect edge out of the box or really good edge retention like the heavy hitters of the knife world, they may not be your cup o tea, but they are real nice cutters for the price and generally a real pleasant knife to carry and use. I try to remember the price point and worry about the overall use of the knife. I can forgive alot on delivery if the over all product does me right and an Opinel hasn't failed to yet. YMMV.

I can see a few slipping through. They only have a small work force compared to how many knives they produce.

Glad to see you fixed that.;)

You would think that knife companies would see sharpening as an important part of the manufacturing process. Or maybe we're just too picky about how sharp we want them to be. Either way I don't worry about it anymore since I'm going to have to sharpen it at some point anyway. I find myself more surprised if I get a knife and it's actually sharp.

Did Opinel change their blade stamp or does it vary by size? My #9 has the logo to the left of the lettering and facing horizontal.
