hey guys im thinking of getting a couple new pairs of pants for hiking this summer, and im just looking for your input. I tend to be a bit rough on pants as i like to hike in montana and wyoming. So the pants will likly see dirt, rocks, rain, snow, mud, ect ect... im looking for something that will dry quicker and hold up a bit better then my cheap pairs im been going through. I tryed a pair of the 5.11 tactical pants with knee pads, i found them to be ok... but the fit was just a bit off. idk hard to explain, i got them on ebay so they may have been knockoffs or even seconds for all i know. I was thinking about these: http://www.us.craghoppers.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_14552_-1_26770_89052_13052_26762
Any body have a pair or tried them out? any way just looking for your suggestions and whats worked for you. thanks guys!

I like convertable pants myself. I dunno what you're doing in your pants, but during the summer, I use light weight pants. Those "Bear Survivor Trousers" look thick but you won't catch me in them during the summer, just for that reason.

ive tried some light weight converts that i got on sale. problem was i riped them pretty fast. do you know of any light wieght rip stop pants maybe?

I've been a recent convert over to Railrider pants. Tough, quick drying, DWR finish, nylon.

im going to check out both those pants. thanks guys, if any one eles has a suggestion feel free to leave it. i apprectiate all feed back.

check out these5.11 pants on closeout

They are a bit heavy, but if you remove the fire retardant material from the inside they are GTG. Even if you keep the lining in there, in cooler weather they are fine, the coating on the knees is great too. For the price, you can't beat them

Craghoppers stuff is really well made, the pants in your link should serve you well and temp wise they will be fine for summer use.

I've worked bucking hay, climbing through lumber etc. with just plain old loggers jeans from 100 degrees to 20 degrees, the pant/short combo pants are nice for light weight fast drying option.

I'm no pant expert though.

thanks for the options guys. any body eles own any of the craghoppers gear? thanks for the advice pitdog. if any one eles owns there gear even shirts let me know. im curious about fit and finish. All there products look nice and seem to have good reviews.

I own a few pairs of Craghoppers.
I have the the one zip (3/4 length) and the two piece zip (3/4 and about 1/3), as well as the plain no zip Kiwi pants. The plain and 3/4 zip are great pants. They dry quickly, aren't too heavy and a rugged enough for me. They also fit well (32"R).
The two piece zip aren't so good for long hikes. I found that the 1/3 length zip area (Around mid thigh) can rub a little over long distances.
I don't have any experience with 5.11 or Railriders, so I can't compare, but I am happy with my 'hoppers. I bought them in the UK for 20 pounds each (About US$30), for that price they are a steal. I don't know about US prices.

Edit: I don't have any Bear Grylls gear. Some of it looks pretty good, but his name is plastered all over it.

I too am looking for some good strong nylon pants for hiking. They need to be tough enough to withstand rock climbing is my main criteria.
I think I will give the "plain Jane" Craghoppers and Rail Riders a try.

I'll be posting a woodsmonkey review of hte craghoppers in the next two days

thanks joe thats awesome. i look forward to reading that. woodsmonkey has quickly become one of my favorite sites!

I have been wearing Tru Spec 24 7 pants. I love them, durable as hell. I have a pair of khaki 100% cotton canvas

and just a few days ago bought a pair of the 65/35 Poly/Cotton blend rip-stop pants

They are fantastic pants to get dirty in. They seem to run a bit long, I had to hem up the pant legs on both pairs as they were too long. Great pockets and the have a really well placed pocket knife pocket. Plus they are pretty reasonably priced.

Nice Youtube overview

After reading your post re:Craghoppers, I went to their website. The Kiwi pants looked like they might be what I've been looking for.
I had some questions so starting Jan. 11, I emailed them at the address provided. Got no reply so the 14th I again sent them an email & called at the tel# on the site. No Reply. The 3rd email sent to the address on their voice message, "Bagwell Store" was returned. I cannot find Bagwell Store on Google. I cannot find the Bagwell Store site when I put it in the address bar. As of today I have still not received any answer to my emails or the 3 voice messages. :thumbdn:
Their pants may work great but I am very leery of buying anything from a place on the web that so far has shown so little interest in replying to requests for info.

i called greg H and left a message twice this week no call back left message with phone numbeer no call back no one awnsers the phone that stinks
