I had an idea today while sitting at my work bench..........
for a new type of passaround,
here is what i was thinking,
I have the materials I send them to one person they grind the profile
then send it to the next person for grinding the bevels
next person for HT
next person for handles
next person for sheath
next person for final sharpening
and at the end we each get it for a week before I use a random number generator
to send it to its final home among one of the people who worked on it!
of course we would have to post pics of the whole process
and if you want in you need to have the proper tools and knowledge this is not a chance for you to try out knifemaking for the first time.

so what do you guys think?

Not something that I have any skill for helping with, but I think it's a great idea. You could even come up with a few designs and have some voting on the forum to see which design gets made.

I was thinking once I get all the guys we would hammer out the sheath/handle/blade design then start the work, Im hoping some of the real knife makers will get in on this

Awesom idea! I wish I could contribute but I would love to see the end result and hear about how it is in use.

You forgot the last person. Noss.

And Cliffy....

Why don't those two make knives anyway? They know so much more than the knifemakers do.

I was thiking about doing 2 knives in this a larger and a smaller knife to go along with it,
I have some 5/32 01 and some 1/8 1095 that would make a sweet combo.

what style are you thinking for the blades?
and on the sheath, are you thinking side by side, stacked, or 2 separate?

This is not a new idea. Collaboration projects have been done many times. Some have been successful ( mainly when there were three or four participants), some have not.
The last time it was done it ended in disaster...or properly said....It didn't end, and was a disaster.

Before getting started I recommend you read the last post

and post #595.

You should realize that many new smiths will gladly jump in and volunteer to join, saying, " I'm in for doing the XYZ.", but when it comes to the actual work they either are not capable of doing it or are too busy skateboarding, playing video games, or doing other stuff,to do the task they volunteered for.

Take a look at the folks who have volunteered so far. I am not saying they are not nice folks, but there is almost no info in their profiles ( including yours), and as a whole their posts don't display much knife making skills.

I just managed the 2009 KITH. We had over 100 eager folks say, "I'm in.I'll make a knife by Dec.1." From that we had 60 who by Dec. 1 said "I'm done with my knife". And even with regular emails and communications to those 60, two people never shipped their knife ( but received one).

I'm not saying don't do this project, and not saying don't use these people - What I am saying is :
Plan this out completely before getting started.
Don't make any changes or additions after is gets going.
Keep it SIMPLE.
Set exact deadlines....and hold the participants to them.
Have complete contact info on every participant. Name, phone, address, email.

We have been working on this same type of thing over in the WS&S forum and it's been severely delayed multiple times. I'm hoping that it'll finally get done one of these days.

I had proposed a similar type of thing except you would have 10 people work on specific steps on 10 knives and at the end all 10 would have essentially the same knife. After the experiences here and elsewhere I'm not so inclined to push this.
