new platen on my 4 x 36?

Is it possible to have a better platen on my 4 x 36 sander? I've searched and can't find any info. Can I lay something on top of the original one? Or does it need to removed first?
 
The existing one isn't perfectly flat. It's close. I'm pretty new to knife making and didn't know if it was important to have a perfect platen. Wondered about a ceramic tile cut to fit. My platen is part of the frame. I haven't tried the sander yet, just thought I would ask to see if it's something I should consider or not
