New Pocket Flashlight

Drat, you guys are making it tough.

Well, I'm going to make it just a little bit tougher. :)

I was the first to suggest the Quark AA. It's what I've been using for the last few months. My next light may be a Zebralight. I like the user interface on the Quark, but it's still a bit clunky. The Zebralight has a side clicky, which is nice (although might be prone to accidental activation.) It also has a perfect UI. Click once for high, click again for medium, and again for low. OR Press and hold for low, click for medium and again for high. In other words, depending on how to press that button, the light can come on in either high or low, and you can cycle through to the next levels from there. These have only been out for a short while so may still have bugs. Or maybe not. They also make a warm version.

I'm no expert on lights, but over the past 18 months I've been VERY pleased with the FenixPD20. No problems at all, compact and powerful. I live in Finland and it's dark almost all the day from mid Nov-end of Jan, this tiny torch(flashlight)has worked really well, that's all.

Specs unfortunately don't always tell all -

Brightness for example - lumens ought to be lumens -

But often manufacturers will quote the "potential" lumens at the "bulb" -
yet others may quote OTF (Out the Front) lumens - which they claim is the actual lumens delivered out the front of the flashlight.
These are different, and not apples to apples.

Best is to read the blurb on the 4Sevens website about OTF lumens.

The link given earlier:
4Sevens Quark AA-R5 Comparison Review
has direct side-by-side comparison of the Quark AA with the Fenix LD10 which shows precisely that specs may not tell all.

Thanks for reminding me of that one. Quark edges into the lead. :)

:eek:Ack! What did you go and do that for? Are you some kind of flashlight dope pusher or something? :) I noticed you brought me in and now you keep upping the ante...

Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it! That one however does go against one of my original criteria, i.e. it has a weirdo battery. Okay I know I know those cr123a batteries are getting easier to come by but good old double and triple As still are far more common. Also I'm trying to not have to store another type of battery around the house.

"Are you some kind of flashlight dope pusher or something?"

Stay away from the candle power forums. They'll get you into the hard stuff.:D

I really like the Fenix E01. It's smaller than you're looking for with about 10 lumens from a AAA. Pretty good for $12. I don't have much to compare it too but Fenix does makes a really nice flashlight.

The Fenix E01 is a very, very nice pocket/keychain light -
here are a few one can compare it to like the classic Arc-AAA -

Fenix E01 Comparison Review

Personally I like the tiny Photo 2 Microlight, as those are so small and light it's almost like not carrying anything extra - there are now lots of clones or "fauxton" - many can be had for less than $1 -
almost no excuse not to have one on a keyring.....
(this would be supplement to one's main flashlight -
although to be honest the Photon/fauxton probably will get more use -
so strictly speaking the other flashlight becomes the supplemental light :p )

Of all the lights I sell, the SC30 is the one I carry. The interface is genius. Instant access to all three levels, really bright when you need it, and a nice compact size. I'm actually finishing up a video on it that I hope to have up tomorrow or this weekend.

I've been carrying a Proton Pro for a couple years now, and I'm pretty satisfied. Bright enough to find stuff on the floor and in dark corners. 1 AA battery, infinitely adjustable brightness on white and red and some other modes I never use. 1 button and a fixed focus. It's pretty slim, too.

It's slightly brighter than the best AA Maglight mods I've used.

It can be had for $40 plus shipping, give or take.

I pocket carry a Quark 2AA Tactical and have it set to low and turbo. The forward clickie is great and I've never found the 2AA to be too big for pocket carry. I appreciate how bright the 2AA can be and love the long runtime.
Eneloops are a must have though, they are LSD and you don't have to worry about battery leakage like with alkalines.

I have this one that I would actually be willing to part with gratis if you are interested. I am not sure of the lumens, but it appears bright enough. Single AAA operation.

Ahh, the River Rock lights. They make some pretty nice lights considering the price. Shame Target dropped them. You can still find some of the parent company's lights around, packaged under Nuwai. The LEDs might be just a touch out of date, but for the price, they're quite nice. They're like the Rough Rider of the flashlight world.

If you only want a simple high/low light, the Fenix/Leatherman L1T/LGX200 might fit your needs. Tighten head, high. Loosen head, low. Relatively small, too. I believe Costco sells the light in a pack with a Leatherman Blast, which isn't half bad, considering that the pack costs just a hair over the price of a new L1T.

Can't comment on the Leatherman, but I've been using my L1Tv2 for a couple years now with ZERO problems. Great output/runtime considering the Cree Q2, and you can easily double the output by swapping the emitter to a XRE R2 if you so desire!

Sub $100 light for ever day pocket carry? 4Sevens Quark. Pick the battery type you like and go to town.

I bought one last month.

Within a couple of weeks, it got stuck in signal mode. And the pocket clip is simply awful.

I haven't gotten around to sending it back for warranty service yet.
