New Police Spyder for me

I just picked up a Police in a plain edge with G-10 handles. The knife was on sale for 50% off, new with red Spyderco box. I was out the door for 83.00. I'm not sure if it was a good deal. Blade is ATS 55? What is ATS 55? How did I do.

Thanks

you did okay. $83 out the door from a brick-and-mortar store is a pretty good deal. It is always good to support brick-and-mortar store. I'd like to know exactly what is written on the box. Possibly a picture. Although I'm not an expert on spyderco dating codes and such.

ATS 55 is an older spyderco steel. good edge retention and toughness. moderate stain resistance in my opinion and from what I've read, it is the same steel I have on my folding Bob Lum Tonto.

The knife you have is I'm almost certain an older model. I would say seven to nine years old rough estimate. I do not believe that many g-10 police were made. in the steel type I am nearly positive is not will would be on the new police model. which I'm fairly certain is not available yet. fact I've not even seen a prototype for it picture.

The fact that it came in a brand-new spyderco box especially but said police model on it, is somewhat disturbing I can't imagine how this would have happened legitimately my best guess would be it is the box from a new stainless steel police it was used for an older model. this model is old enough that it was probably a shelf model where the box that it originally came from was lost.

Again you got a classic not necessarily the perfect modern user. but a good knife in my opinion more functional than the modern stainless steel version.

I paid about $95 for a used one with no box on eBay a while back. I'd say you did pretty good.

The ATS-55 is similar to ATS-34 but with less molybdenum. That removes some of the high speed properties that are essentially wasted on knife steel anyway, making it less expensive and (I think) less finicky about the heat-treatment. It is good steel, I have several of the older Spyderco knives that use it and they have performed well.

I assume the box was the old all red one, and not the new red and black. I believe that would be the correct box for a knife from that era.

Druid that depends on the red box; the second Spyderco box was red (the first was blue). Or was it the third box offered, the second was blue, and the first was white? :D

In any event, there was a red box about the same time frame as that knife, so it depends upon which red box he has with the knife.

In any event; he could easily double his money if he wanted to with a g10 plain edge police should he want to, so he did good

You did somewhere between very well, and extremely well. All styles of the G-10 Police are sought after by collectors, some more than others. Does it have a blade that looks like the regular SS version's, or one that is full flat ground? Does it have a single steel liner on the clip side of the the handle, or is it unlined? Does it have a regular 3 screw clip, or the "C" style where the mount curves around the blade pivot? Is the blade marked POLICE, or not?

That's a great deal! Is it a full flat grind or a hollow grind model? I have two full flat grind, G-10 Police models and I love them. One of my favorite Spydercos.

Hmmm nice find for the money. These go really well on Ebay. nearly my most favourite Police model. Favourite is this knife with the Boye Dent.
BTW the box is correct.

Thanks for the post.

I would only move it for one of the larger Emersons with a wave a X18 or towards an other nice custom large folders.

If someone has one of the above email me at
tjtuckercorgi1@juno.com as I would rather have a forum member who collects Spyders have it.

The dealer is closing out all of his Spydercos at 50% off list price.
If any one wants his contact info shoot me an email.
Most are regular production but I remember he has a limited Ed Native with inlays number 398 of 500 He also had a couple of Cilivans with G10 handles and a case.
