In the course of clearing out a local shooting range, a buddy of mine got bit by the heavy chopper bug, courtesy of my 1311. He wants to get his own 1311, but suggested that we build our own choppers as a project. I made one blade out of unknown carbon bar stock in high school, but I have very, very little experience with "rolling my own". The idea so far: Acquire 52100 bar stock, get it laser cut to shape, grind in all bevels ourselves, send it off to Peter's HT for tempering, then get the blades coated and sheathed if time and funds allow. The idea is for a .25 inch thick, 13-18 inch clip point blade, kinda like a Busse MOAB on steroids:cool: Handles will be black canvas micarta with fasteners similar to those on Stabman's homemade beast. FFG blade with either convex or V-edge. At this point we are still figuring out the estimated total cost, and are looking for a friendly local knifemaker in or around College Station TX who might be willing to help a pair of newbies along. Any and all advice is appreciated, still unsure as to what hardness to run the blade at, among other things.
Mods, I sure hope I put this in the right spot. Please move if I was wrong.

Lots to work on there.

There are many makers in TX, and many others that could do a lot of the work you want done ( mail is the easiest way in many cases). I would suggest you post your ideas and request in The Exchange - Services Wanted.

If you plan on doing most of the work yourselves, read the tutorials in the stickies on basic knife making. Without power tools, making a big knife is a big task...but still doable. Hooking up with a local smith would be a really good idea. Check out the local knifemakers societies, suppliers, and other groups. Here is a simple search with many starter ideas:
