It will hold all my PSK and then some, as well as being used to boil water, scrape and dig with. (the lid is very tough)

thats pretty pimp, what exactly is it? seems versital.

its a SS army mess kit set

This cook set looks like the German or Swedish army mess kits I used to see being sold in the old Military surplus stores. VERY, VERY good quality stuff if original!

Your fire kit pouch is a winner too. Beautiful to look at and well made!

And I love the idea of a wilderness keyboard too! Do you plug it into a current bush? ;)

as for the origin of the stainless steel mess kit , believe it or not its US issue many moons ago:

WWII era 'style' U.S. mess kit.

If I'm not mistaken, that would be aluminum not stainless steel. They also made an aluminum cup that fit over the base of the old aluminum 1 qt. G.I. canteen.

Definately handy....

If you can find an older (circa 1970s) Boy Scout mess kit they are pretty well thought out also. Don't get the new ones (1980s on...) though because they really cheaped out on them.

I have one of those mess kits. It's indeed stainless (no way aluminum weighs that much). Never thought of using it as a psk container. Only one potential problem I can see, if you actually use it to cook with, how long does it have to cool before you can load the stuff back into it?

Because it's thin and with a large surface area, it should cool really quickly. Especially outdoors with a little breeze.

great link Mongrel, cheers! looks like my "MEAT CAN" is made from CRS, late 50-s to 80's.....

new thread title: MEAT CAN PSK with leather firekit pouch....:D

Now, THAT is some cool kit!
I have strayed far from my old habits of scrounging and being creative and it's a pleasure to see it is still alive. I had a mess kit like that when I was a kid and was disappointed when I joined the Army and found out hey no longer used them. The unsectioned side had a handle and made a neat camp fire fry-pan. The leather pouch is great too. I have been eyeballing every camera/camcorder case I come across trying to find just he righth-sized pouch for a bit more than the absolute bare essentials but cameras just keep getting smaller and the cases are about big enough for an Altoids tin!

Thanks for sharing!

Where did you get that firekit pouch and what metal tin is your kit in? Thanks

I got the pouch locally form a outdoors store, it was a trade in for some gear. They dont normally carry such nice tooled leather

the tin is from a tin of pipe tobacco. Go to a pipe store or tobbaco seller and look for pipe tobacco in the tins, they have a rubber seal too.

about 3" x 5"

Hell, they still make canteen cups to fit the plastic canteens.
And they made the kits out of SS and aluminum.
I've got one with 1966 stamped on handle.
You guys act like it's never been seen before.
Never watched a WWII movie??
I will say that's the first time I've seen a strap around one.
It usually fits into a WWII meat can pouch that fits on haversack.
I've got a mess kit pouch that has slots for knife, fork, spoon and a long shoulder strap.
