New Pukko Knife

Looks great. I snickered when I read Kismet's post, as I was thinking that it looks like it needs some use to really be comfortable. I think it will just get better with the years.

Thanks Josh. I agree. I made this one as a user, and plan to use use use it. I finished the scabbard last night, and plan to take some pics.

Runs, I use files to make my blades. They are already hard, in fact, harder than is useful for a knife. I grind out the general blade, then anneal (soften) in the oven by heating to 375 for ~an hour and allowing to cool slowly. This gets the blade to a correct hardness for a knife. Then I grind with finer grit at the sander, and polish with sandpaperr by hand. I learned this process from Sarge. You can look up his tutorials by searching for Po-Boy projects. The knife cost me less than two dollars to make. I already had the wood and brass scavenged, and the file was in a group of six I got at a pawn shop for ten dollars. I got two blades out of the file.

Andy, just curious, what's the surface oxidation color you're getting at 375 degrees? To get a proper dark straw yellow(which is actually a light brownish color), I usually have to go up to around 415-425 on my oven, but ovens vary, sometimes quite a bit.

By the way hoss, "The knife cost me less than two dollars to make." , you are now a full fledged member of the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Club. :D

Oh good. I was always wondering how to break into that group. At 375 I get a dark straw color much like Bass Ale. If you think I need to up it some let me know.

It is fine to compare the colors of the heated metal and Bass ale . It is best that the Bass ale is at its optimum temperature as well ! Unfortunately they do not make a thermometer sensitive enough to make this determination . Only severe , rigorous and time consuming taste tests may discern this .
I offer my services for a minor fee and even give half price coupons for any future work you require of me . L:O:L

It sounds like we three would have a sportin good time at the local pub drinking pints of good brew and discussing sharpituity. I have noticed the appreciation of kind beer here on occasion. I'd love to drink a couple of pints with you gents over a collection of sharp knives. Sounds like quite a time!

Well Andy I agree with you as in what you did to your handles. Pretty !

As in people say that knifes shall be used and have a history of use markedon their blades....YES agree totally.

And 'Life is too short to carry an ugly knife' rings a bell too.

Heard that in ancient times the Japanese samuris took extra lengths of time to prepare their armors and weapons as in that would be the last day they would wear it.

Now there's a brand new word for Funk & Wagnalis and Webster's! :D

Seems like there are many of us here that like the same things. Good brew is always a welcome guest at any decent gathering of real men!!!! :D
