New Purchases Change Daily Carry?

In corresponding with my friend Classified00, I've found that the purchase of a new knife changes our daily carry. For example, I start to lug the 'new stuff,' because all of the old stuff starts looking long-in-the-tooth. Sometimes after a few weeks, I go back to my favorites. Classified00 does it a different way. He thinks a new knife changes the status of collection, and he starts carrying the 'worst' knife as his daily beater. Now, I haven't put down my new LCC since I got it 2 weeks ago, while Classified00 has buried his new LCC under inch-thick lucite and a pound of petroleum jelly. Who's the odd man here?--OKG

According to some, all of us.

Personally, I've got to carry the newest toy, at least for a few days, while I decide where it belongs in the line-up.

I carry depending on what I am doing that day and how I will be dressed. Dressing down and hard work = SOCOM. Dressing a little better and occasional cutting = Dark Star. Dessed up and going out with no forseeable cutting = Lancet. Sports type of day = Clip-it. With some variations depending on style and company. Trident may replace SOCOM, Super Tinker may replace DarkStar, Micra may replace Lancet, etc as needed.

It is not the fall that kills you. It is the realization that "yes, you did something that stupid."

No, no, no. New knife gets carried, period. But like some of you others, this is until it sorts itself out. Now I understand if it is an impractical knife to carry. Otherwise I want to carry it to see how it carries and how it will perform. This is why it is a good idea to space out acquisitions. Too many new blades at one time will have you going banana's. I currently am carrying a Boguszewski Wegner. This has a pocket clip so I can carry it that way. The Doziers, without a clip have to be carried in a sheath, and that limits how often I can carry them. Can't wait to send them back to be retrofitted for a clip!
Always a good idea to carry an extra or two for those times when it might be inappropriate to "pull" out one. I always carry a UDT that sees its share of cutting tasks.
Now this is probably another post in the making, but do the rest of you carry this way? You know sometimes I am just a bit hesitant to hand over a favorite to someone else. Especially if they don't appreciate a knife as I do!
Well, it's off to the part time job to earn more knife money!

Always carry the new one. After a week or more (not less), decide if it's still going to be carried, or left at home if it doesn't carry as well as the knife it temporarily displaced. (For folders at least, I can't carry fixed blades as easily)

As far as lending out new knives, always carry more than one, and usually more than two, on a hard day, more than three.

I usually carry my newest knife, unless it is one that is more for collecting than for using. My LCC is my newest knife, and also my daily carry. However, sometimes I'll carry a less expensive beater knife if I know ahead of time that it might be damaged from abuse, or a dirty/wet environment.

Any new knife that's at all appropriate, I put on KP for a couple days at least. My Sebenza has turned out to be a favorite for slicing fruits and vegetables, and will probably continue to work in the kitchen. But that hasn't stopped me from carrying it all day, either. If I think I'm going to be beating it up, I'll go back to my Benchmade emerson 975.

I don't carry a separate knife to loan out, because I won't hand over a knife to someone I don't think can handle one. You guys can borrow my knives anytime!

It sounds like OKG forget his meds again this morning

Before anyone starts thinking I don't like to play with my toys, let me clarify. I have my NEW LCC sitting next to me right now. I've opened it ATLEAST 50 times since I've been home. When it arrived yesterday, I tried it in my pocket, tried on the sheath, and yes cleaned it after I played with it and put in my 'toy box'

This is my first MT and I will admit that my other knives now look alot more like "users" to me.
* This is a bit off topic but... I'd like to commend the state of Wisconsin for allowing Correctional Institute Inmates, like Old Knife Guy, to have internet access. I think it shows the state's progressive nature.

I generally carry the new knife for a little while. I find myself reverting back to my all time favs for daily carry.

The new knife always gets #1 position on my person!!

Immediately!!!

I sometimes feel guilty though, kind of like I'm cheating.

Nothing has displaced my AFCK since the day the first one arrived. Oh, I've tried others for a day or two but I end up right back with an AFCK. Love at first sight, a love that endures to this day. I think of it as cutlery fidelity.

Hey, Classified00, I believe that you have actually 'touched' the LCC. I believe you have opened it. What you call 'cleaned,' most doctors refer to as a 'sterile scrub.' Now for the big question, have you actually 'cut' anything with it? Be honest, this drab gray cell and those tranqulizer darts show the wages of sin...--OKG

A new purchase always gets carry...albeit for a short time if it will be a collector. Since my indoctrination at Bladeforums I have acquired many knives, too many to carry, but the rotation goes on...keep em sharp gents

Oh, yes. All it needs is an Axis lock so I can carry tip-up.
Any knife I buy is going to get used and carried, but I don't leave the house without my AFCK. New knives accompany it, but so far none have replaced it.

Won't touch that, but if you're not going to cut something, you've missed the whole point of having a knife

OKG,
I shaved a bit of hair off my arm within minutes of opening the box (using my trusty 705). I now await a 'cutting opportunity' to arise

Well it is hard to say who the odd man out is, but I tend to carry my latest knife most often, though I do sometimes carry each of the knives that I own.
Carrying your knifes that are in the worst condition makes a lot of sense if you put them through hard jobs all the time. You would not want to damage your new pride and joy.

Greg,
very nice indeed!
whats fun is to carry the new knife and then be able to come back to one thats been "resting" for several days, weeks, or months. It's like getting a new knife! Been carrying a Boguszewski Wegner for several days now. Within the past month I've carried a MT Socom Elite auto, personally polished by ME. I have also carried my Dozier Buckhunter, although in a sheath since it has no clip, YET! Off and on I've carried a LCC and Sebenza. Am now waiting for my Dozier folding dagger to get here, again it will be in a sheath, for now. Every time I change off I gain a new appreciation for whatever characteristic drew me to that particular knife in the first place! Oh yea, all along I carried a UDT to use and loan along with a Spydie G-10 Rookie.
Again this may be a new post, but my favorite carry has to be the Wegner. This knife just seems to be able to do all I want a knife to do! I've carried it from Spyderco, a lightweight Boguszewski model ( single liner), and now, best yet, a double ti liner with canvas micarta slabs. Only thing that I have that will give it a run for its money is the Dozier BH, when it gets a clip.....although that folding dagger may be a close second!
well, just had to get that off my chest.

For me, it depends more on why I bought the knife. For example, I have 'users' and 'collectors'. Any production knife I buy is a user because I normally buy two of each: one for carrying and one as a replacement. On the other hand, any custom knife I buy is generally (but not always) a collector. I don't carry any model of Polkowski or Dozier, for example, unless I can acquire multiple copies of a specific knife. This is often expensive and time consuming to accomplish, so except for my favorite knife design from a custom maker I usually only have one copy which is not carried.
