New Purchases Change Daily Carry?

Yup, I always carry the new knives around for the first couple of days when I get them to see how well they fit. My co-workers have gotten pretty used to me asking them if they have anything to cut a day or two after a new knife is delivered to my desk.

Once I figure them out then I look over all my favourites and decide if the new knives falls there or is relegated into the drawers. My favourites are rotated for daily carry wihch at the moment is a small Sebenza and Mirage GG.

I'm moving up in my daily carry knife in steps. I bought this knife yesterday,

This is an AG Russell 'One Hand Knife' with jigged bone scales, a very nice knife. This will replace the two production knives I've been carrying, Spyderco/Walker lt/wt and CRKT small KFF.

I won't get to carry it right away first it has to go to Gary Graley (G2) for one of his sheaths. I won't be carrying it for long because I just ordered my first custom linerlock folder with 3" raindrop pattern Damascus warncliff blade and stag scales. So I'm moving on up slowly.

I always carry my new blade for about a week, or at least a weekend in the case of FBs as I can't usually find a way to carry them during the work week. Then, all too often, I put them in the storage chest with a sad shake of my head as I mutter "It's not the one!".The ones that make that cut go into the daily rotation.(My two latest, a Cuda CQB2 and a Busse Basic 3 both made the cut with much room to spare!)

Usually carry the new one for a few days to see if I like it and where it belongs in my scheme of things. Just got a mini Dyad a few weeks ago and it has been toted around since then. I like having both blades except it isn't the most comfortable knife to hold when one or the other blade is open. You have trade offs no mater what. It usually goes with me to work and on weekends rides in the front pocket while the Sebenza is clipped to the same pocket. The small SAK on my key ring. Those little SAKs are the handiest little things. I keep one on each set of keys.

Yeah, new purchases can change my daily carry knife. I've been very happy with my small Spyderco Centofante for the last year and a half, but as of today, it's retired.

I picked up a really slim 3 inch front lock-back from PJ Tomes yesterday at the NY Custom Show. The blade is CPM 420V. Really colorful pearl scales. Super smooth action. It really walks and talks. Lock up is really nice sounding. This will be my daily carry for a while, although it may share time in my pocket with the Tim Herman plain sliver I have on order.

This is really kind of fun for me. I have been collecting fixed blade hunters for several years, and rarely have a good reason to carry or use most of them. I have been getting increasingly interested in small elegant carry folders.

I recently bought a Daniel Winkler damascus and mammoth ivory lock back folder. I spoke with Karen Shook at the NY show and she is going to make me a small slip sheath for that one so that I can carry it too. When I get the Herman knife, I will probably have to set my sights on as many as four more nice folders, one for each day of the week. Then I can work on getting at least 24 more folding knives, so I can carry a different one every day of every month. But then I will probably want to collect 334 of them, so I could carry a different knife every day of the year. And of course, I will absolutely have to get one more very special knife to be carried only on February 29 every four years.

But I think I may be getting carried away with this line of thinking...

What AlaChoctaw wrote hit it all right on the head for me...that is, I am always buying a new knife hoping that THIS next one will be THE one. The perfect knife (for me). To date, no matter what I buy, there is usually some small thing that I'd like to change about any knife. I'm sure most of us have a box (or two)of past knives that we 'tried-out' for a while and then replaced. Fortunately, Al Polkowski seems to make almost exactly what I want from a FB. But still, the search is on for my perfect folder...*sigh*...
